All dogs bite.
Anytime someone asks, “Does he bite?” My answer is always “Yes.”
WILL he bite? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean the risk isn’t there.

The right circumstances could provoke a bite from ANY dog. Immediately after, you’ll hear, “He’s never done that before!” There’s a first time for everything.

Dogs are NOT stuffed toys. They have their own feelings, perceptions, experiences and BOUNDARIES.

A dog that snaps at someone isn’t a “bad dog”. It’s most likely a dog that was afraid, hurt or insecure- whose boundaries (and a multitude of warning signals) were ignored.

Advocate for your dog. Intervene when they are uncomfortable. If you don’t know how to read stress signals on a dog… go pet a few cats. They’ll teach you about boundaries without being euthanized for giving you an education.

You don’t have to set aside time for structured training every day. Find the small opportunities in between. Build training moments into your routine. Ask for a few behaviors when you’re sipping coffee in the morning. Ask for a calm sit before you open the door or set down their food. Practice the “place” command when guest are over. Ask for recall periodically when you’re out on the trail- BEFORE you need it in an emergency. And if your dog can’t perform when the stakes are low, don’t expect a miracle when the pressure is on. Where do you find training opportunities in your day?

Training should be fun for you and your dog. Find what motivates them to work. For Atlas, it’s a tug. Between commands I pay him with a tug session. My dog doesn’t work for free.

As a trainer, tricks aren’t all that important. Sure, teaching a new trick is good for relationship building and engaging your dog’s brain but it doesn’t really translate into a useful SKILL in the real world. Teaching your dog to have an off-switch, regulate their emotions and develop impulse control…these are truly valuable skills for a dog trying to exist in a human world. Teach your dog the art of DOING NOTHING. It’s not flashy but it’s the real flex.

If you want a “good” dog, you have to be willing to make an investment in them. That’s the magic answer- fulfill their biological needs AND learn how to communicate in a language they understand with CONSISTENCY. It’s simple, not easy; but 100% worth it.

I often get asked what kind of treats I use for my pup. My answer is: Treats with a SINGLE ingredient listed on the bag. Dehydrated or freeze dried organs and meats and duck feet for dental health. Avoid anything that’s TOO HARD as a chew- like antlers and yak cheese. Avoid treats with a ton of ingredients you don’t recognize. And always treat in moderation. 60% of dogs in the US are overweight or obese.

*Bully sticks probably shouldn’t make my list because they are hard to digest and can pose a choking risk….However, I like eating stuff that isn’t the best for me once in a while, so my dog gets a cheat day too. ;)

Trouble with nail trimming? Your time and patience are the only things holding most dogs back from calm pedicures. If you invest a little time each day to help your dog process their stress around the equipment and having their paws handled, you can be successful doing trims at home. If you start this process during puppyhood, that’s the best time, but you can do this with adult dogs too. Let it take the time it takes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Break it down into smaller pieces if needed and go SLOWLY. IE- Let them smell the trimmer while it’s off. Do multiple sessions just turning the trimmer on and off in their proximity. Turn the trimmer on and set it on the floor. Offer a treat and allow them to come close to the trimmer as they feel comfortable. Toss a treat for each move toward it. IF YOU THINK YOUR DOG MIGHT BE A BITE RISK- use a muzzle and/or tether. This method isn’t suitable for every dog and handler combination. If it’s too stressful for you or your dog, there’s nothing wrong with getting professional trims.
