Tonight, Advanced class took over Home Depot for some real-world recall work! We turned shopping carts into an obstacle course and challenged the dogs to navigate around, through, and over them while still coming when called.

Because a solid recall isn’t just about coming when there’s nothing else going on. It’s about choosing your human when the environment is full of distractions, obstacles, and a million other things to investigate.

A HUGE congratulations to our Intermediate Class on some very exciting accomplishments!

Milo, Laramie, Mocha, and Bailey all passed their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) tests and are officially new title holders!

And a special congratulations to Nala and Rupp, who took it a step further and passed their Canine Good Citizen Advanced (CGCA) tests - earning their new titles as well!

These titles represent so much more than passing a test. They reflect the time, consistency, communication, and teamwork each of these teams has put into their training.

I’m incredibly proud of all of you. Congratulations to our newest title holders - you earned it!

Oliver is putting his brain to work! 🧠

Right now, we’re working on color discrimination, teaching him to distinguish between blue and yellow, with orange added as a factor of elimination. It’s not just about recognizing a color; it’s about learning to process the information, make a choice, and communicate that choice correctly.

And yes, dogs actually see colors differently than we do!

Dogs are dichromatic, meaning they primarily see in shades of blue and yellow, while reds, oranges, and greens are much harder for them to distinguish and can appear more like shades of yellow, brown, or gray.

So when we ask Oliver to tell the difference between these colors, we’re giving him a problem that requires actual thought and decision-making not just obedience.

Mental work is just as important as physical exercise, and Oliver is proving that a Corgi brain is always ready for a challenge.

FALL LEAGUE IS COMING!

Phoenix Rising Disc Dogs is wrapping up the year with our 90-Second Fall League!

We’ve got five weeks of toss & fetch, and this will most likely be our final league session of the year. Come out, throw some discs, run your dogs, and enjoy one more season together!

Heel work isn’t just “walking nicely.”
It’s a skill…

What looks like a simple walk beside you is actually built through hundreds and hundreds of repetitions—creating value for the left side, teaching the dog exactly where that position is, reinforcing engagement, and then slowly adding movement.

One step. Reward. Reset.
One step. Reward. Reset.
Then two steps. Three steps. Four, Five…

We don’t just expect a dog to magically understand how to stay in position while we move. We build the behavior one repetition at a time until that position becomes valuable, clear, and predictable to the dog. And then proofing it through distractions comes way later.

So yes, walking your dog can actually be an advanced skill. And the polished heel you see at the end? It’s the result of a whole lot of tiny pieces being put together. 💙

Storm has been working on her heel, place & stay, and formal recall, and this little girl is making some seriously impressive progress. She’s learning to stay engaged, listen through distractions, and understand that good things come from making the right choices.

She may only be 3 months old, but she’s showing us that age doesn’t have to limit what a puppy can learn in even just one week. This little one is doing SO good, she’s so much fun to work with💕
