Good evening everyone,
I would like to thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to find and follow this page.
As I’ve alluded to in my previous posts, safe paws refuge was built out of a need that I myself encountered when leaving an abusive marriage. In 2022, I took 24 hours to frantically pack my things and leave. I had called the women’s shelter and had been told that I could come, but my pets were being turned away. I hurriedly searched for other solutions, and was finally able to move in with family. Because of that ability, I was able to safely and swiftly leave a rapidly devolving situation. Without getting too deep into the details, I truly believe my life was imminently at risk, and the only way forward was out.
I realize how lucky I was, because not everyone has trusted people, such as friends or family, that would be able to help them out in this way. Asking to move in with someone at a moments notice and bring your pets is a lot to ask. But it shouldn’t be. And now it doesn’t have to be.
My nonprofit is ready and willing to serve those individuals leaving human trafficking and domestic violence situations to search for a better tomorrow. Whether or not you have pets, we want you to be able to leave, and live. If that means temporarily housing your pet for you, we will readily help you.
We plan to partner with each domestic violence shelter locally, but of course wouldn’t want to turn away someone that is referred to us from another domestic violence shelter, even if they aren’t local. We are in the process of making an effort to meet with each shelter in Pitt County and surrounding counties. Because of the delicate nature of what we offer, we may or may not post any animals that are currently with us on our page. That has yet to be decided. Anonymity is typically best in these scenarios for the safety of everyone involved. We are excited for this new chapter!
