With a heavy heart, we had to make a heartbreaking decision at Chase’s appointment yesterday.

Deep down, I knew there might be more going on than his cleft lip and palate. I hoped and prayed it was something we could treat with antibiotics and that we could continue the care we’d been giving him. Sadly, after learning more about his condition, we understood that his quality of life would be poor and that we might face this decision again in the near future.

I couldn’t bear the thought of prolonging his suffering for my own sake, so I made the difficult choice to let him go peacefully.

This is one of the hardest parts of what we do. I can take comfort in knowing that I fought for Chase for 16 days—and that for those 16 days, all he knew was love.
