Hi everyone! I want to give a big shoutout to Mycaela, from 2Pawfect Barkery. She’s new to the area, and I had the pleasure of having her over today, and my dogs and fur clients, had the opportunity to try her delicious homemade dog treats. They were definitely a hit! I highly recommend her, and if you decide to try them as well, be sure to mention that you heard about her from me, so that you can get them for $10 a bag. If you’re a client of mine and would like some sent home with your dog, just let me know. I love supporting other local small businesses. Thank you Mycaela!!!🐶💗

For millions of people, a pet is not property. They are the heartbeat waiting at the front door.

A proposal in Virginia tried to move the law closer to that simple truth.

The bill focused on dogs and cats kept as companion animals. It would have made maliciously killing one of these animals a Class 6 felony, whether the animal belonged to the attacker or to somebody else.

That could have meant up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $2,500, or both.

Supporters saw the proposal as a way to recognize the special place pets hold in our homes. A chair can be replaced. A television can be replaced. A beloved dog or cat cannot.

The bill followed a painful case involving two dogs that were deliberately killed. Felony convictions in that case were later overturned because the law required proof that the animals had suffered.

The proposal attempted to close that gap by making the malicious killing itself a felony.

It passed the Virginia Senate without a single opposing vote. However, it was later left in a House committee and did not become law during the 2026 regular session.

It is also important to be clear about what the bill actually said.

It did not officially give pets the same legal standing as human family members. It did not create pet custody rights or remove their legal status as property.

But it did send a powerful message.

Animals are living companions. They feel pain, give trust and become part of the daily lives of the people who love them.

For anyone who has held a pet during their final moments, this issue is not small or symbolic.

They were never “just an animal.”

They were family.
