Topic of the week: gentle leader
Q:What is a gentle leader and when should it be used?
A: A gentle leader is a halter like training aid that is fitted for the dogs face. This is NOT a muzzle. This aid is used when the collar/harness/easy walk harness have not been successful. This aid is great for dogs who are overly excited and need an extra reminder of how to act.
Pros:
-great for dogs who are overly excited in public (IE: batsh*t crazy)
-great for leash reactive dogs who are triggered by other animals
-great for dogs who either pull through an easy walk harness, collar, or harness; and for dogs who are excessively loud (IE: barking)
Cons:
-If not fitted correctly, the device can injure the dog, either by creating rub marks on the dogs face or if the dog is let out too far on the leash and suddenly stopped, it can injure the dogs neck.
-some dogs learn to pull through this device. However, if used correctly, the device can be a great training aid!
-most people use the gentle leader as a crutch for training, instead of learning to train with it, or they don't use it correctly and it doesn't help with why its being used in the first place.
On a personal note, I use a flow method in determining when specific devices need to be used. Here's how I determine what training tool needs to be used:
REGULAR COLLAR/HARNESS->EASY WALK HARNESS->GENTLE LEADER->PRONG COLLAR (NEVER CHOKE CHAIN)(ONLY AS A LAST RESORT)
I personally use the gentle leader with my leash reactive dog in public. It gives me more control and a quicker redirection for my dog when starting to go into meltdown mode.
