November 2026 pairing
First time pairing of:
Delaney x Tater
Delaney has champion lines.
May produce sable or blacks.
We have had sables in the past out of our retired girl Scarlett. I’ve attached a photo of one of our past sable puppies named Jewel.
🌟 What Is “Sable” in Shih Tzus?
Sable is not a solid color, it’s a coat pattern where each hair strand has dark tipping (usually black) over a lighter base color.
That darker overlay gives the coat depth, shading, and a “smoky” look.
⸻
🧬 How to Recognize a Sable Shih Tzu
✔ Dark-tipped hairs (especially on ears, face, back, and tail)
✔ Lighter base color underneath (gold, red, cream, chocolate, etc.)
✔ Often darker as puppies
✔ The shading may lighten as they mature
💡 Many sable puppies are born very dark and gradually change as they grow.

🎨 Types of Sable in Shih Tzus
🔸 Red Sable
Red or golden base with black overlay.
🔸 Cream Sable
Light cream base with soft black shading.
🔸 Gold Sable
Warm golden coat with darker tipping.
🔸 Chocolate Sable
Brown-based coat with darker brown shading (no black pigment).
⸻
🐶 Does Sable Change Over Time?
Yes! Shih Tzus are known for coat transitions.
• The black tipping can fade.
• Some puppies keep strong overlay.
• Others mature into lighter shades.
This makes sable especially fascinating — what you see at 8 weeks may not be the final look at 1 year.
⸻
🧬 The Genetics Behind Sable
Sable is controlled by genes at the Agouti locus.
It influences how pigment is distributed along each hair shaft.
It’s a natural and recognized coat pattern in Shih Tzus.
⸻
✨ Fun Fact
Sable puppies often have that dramatic “eyeliner” look when young due to darker shading around the eyes and muzzle.
