Piedmont Animal Welfare Alliance is an animal welfare & social justice nonprofit in Forsyth County, NC. We envision a world where no person or animal will be thrown away, and our mission is to make our community one where all pets and people have safe and loving homes. www.paw-alliance.org

To fulfill our mission, we have two programs:
A New Leash on Life prison dog-training program: Saving Men's

Lives, One Dog at a Time. Shelter dogs in need of training receive 10 weeks of training: crate- and house-training; obedience training, advanced obedience, and some agility. Qualified inmate-trainers work under the volunteer guidance of instructors from the W-S Dog Training Club. All dogs are spay/neutered, fully vaccinated and under veterinary care. This program changes the lives of both dogs AND men, who perhaps for the first time, receive unconditional love. Our trainers' recidivism rate, since 2015, is 0%! All our dogs are adopted into loving homes. OUR DOGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! Please go to https:www.paw-alliance.org/adopt

Our second program, A New Start in Life, offers temporary loving care for domestic violence survivors' pets. We provide foster care, medical care, and all necessities while the survivor is in the d.v. We ALWAYS need volunteers and fosters. Please reach out to us. www.paw-alliance.org/volunteer and www.paw-alliance.org/foster

Mystery Amazon delivery for PAW Alliance!

A surprise package showed up at our door with no donor name—but inside were a snuffle mat and TWO martingale collars!

We may not know who sent these goodies, but we hope you know how much we—and the pups—appreciate you!

To our mystery friend: THANK YOU for thinking of PAW Alliance and helping us care for the dogs who count on us. 🐾

Finished watercolors will be 2.5"x3.5" and come with a hard cover.

Lori has also graciously donated 8x10" custom commissioned pet portraits to the auction, so be sure to check that out, too!

PUDATE ON WINNIE!

If there is a picture in the Dog Adoption Dictionary under Foster Fail… it would be Ms Winnie for sure!

Winnie went to my daughter’s home as a foster after her 2nd session at NLOL. From a shelter favorite at Davie County Animal Services to the ‘house mother’ and perfect trainee at the Forsyth Correctional Center, no one could understand why she hadn’t been adopted.

So off she went into foster, sharing the house with an aging semi-spoiled sometimes grouchy pit named Butch. She immediately was super respectful of Butch by stepping back when he slowly went down the stairs.

After a day or so, my daughter shook her head and said she couldn’t understand who wouldn’t want Winnie…. Butch had a thunder phobia and often ended up cowering in the tub during storms, so the day my daughter found Winnie laying on the rug near the tub with Butch inside was the day that foster failed.

When Butch passed, Winnie/Winnebago easily assumed Queen of house status.
She spends her days going from couch to bed to couch, helping in the garden, taking walks at Pilot Mtn, visiting with us next door and taking my daughter’s granddaughter to school ( which she takes very seriously). She never saw a car she didn’t want to ride in and won’t ever turn down a snack and we are all that much happier for having her join our family.

We have to thank Lisa at Davie for being her champion and suggesting her for our program, to the NLOL program and instructors for taking in the older, slightly overweight grand dame and especially her trainer Montel who believed in her and loved her unconditionally. "

Now this a great way to celebrate the holiday!

One of the most common concerns we hear for not fostering is, ‘I couldn’t bear to say goodbye.’” And we understand. Its hard for us too.

Falling in love with a foster pet is part of the experience. Saying goodbye can be hard. Sometimes, really hard. But what our foster families tell us again and again is that the goodbye is also filled with so much joy.

Because when you say goodbye to your foster, you’re not losing them—you’re sending them toward their happy ending. You get to know that, for a little while, you were their safe place. You gave them a warm bed, a full belly, a little love, and the chance to feel safe again.

And then you get to watch them leave for the next chapter of their life.

A forever home.
A family reunion.
A fresh start.
A second chance.

That’s the magic of fostering.

The goodbye may be hard, but the joy of knowing you helped create a happy ending is even bigger.

So if the only thing holding you back from fostering is the fear of saying goodbye, maybe it’s time to take a chance. Open your heart. Open your home. Help create a happy ending.

It’s a Gabby PUPDATE!

We celebrated Gabby's Gotcha Day on 7/19/26 (one year!) and she took her first long road trip to Pennsylvania not long after. Gabby is a dream traveling companion and did great in the car, at all the busy rest stops, and as a very good AirBnB guest.

She got to meet family members (2-and4-legged) for the first time and attend her very first open-air concert. Gabby has come so far, from an anxious, unsure shelter pup to a confident, loving, well-behaved traveler.

I credit NLOL and our partners for this. Who knows where Gabs would have ended up without the care, attention, and support she received at FOSS (Friends of Stokes Shelter) in her amazing NLOL foster home with Beverly and Patrick Fitzgerald, and of course at Forsyth Correctional Center with trainer Dennis.

I am so thankful for EVERYONE who brought Gabby into our home and hearts!”
