First high school rodeo season for Rip and he is killing it. So privileged to have trained this horse — easily one of my favorites ever.

Gia has put in so much work in lessons and it’s paying off. Love watching these two succeed together 🐴🤍

Not every kid needs a new horse, a new trainer or a new piece of equipment every time they stop winning.

Sometimes they need time.

Time to learn how to ride the horse they have. Time to make mistakes. Time to struggle through a rough patch. Time to develop the skills that eventually make them capable of winning consistently.

I think we’ve gotten so used to instant results that sometimes we forget what youth competition is actually supposed to be developing.

A kid can have a successful weekend without bringing home a check.

Maybe they finally rode past the first barrel instead of getting in its way. Maybe they handled a bad run without falling apart. Maybe they took care of their own horse all weekend. Maybe they learned how to lose gracefully, congratulate the kid who beat them, and come back ready to work Monday.

Those things aren’t as exciting to post on Facebook, but they’re building a competitor.

And constantly changing the horse, trainer, tack or program every time the results aren’t immediate can accidentally teach a completely different lesson:

If I’m not winning, something else must be the problem.

Sometimes changing something absolutely IS the right answer.

But sometimes the answer is simply giving a kid enough time to become the rider their goals require.

Where do you think the line is between making a necessary change and teaching a young rider to work through the process?
