You Can Rescue

You Can Rescue We are a team of three women who spend majority of our free time volunteering for the animal rescue community in various ways. You can rescue!

We decided to start the "You Can Rescue" movement to inspire and encourage others to get involved.

CHAMP 📍 Lee County Animal Shelter, Bishopville, SC Lee County Animal Shelter-Bishopville

This is why you don’t judge a book by its cover.

Champ is the longest resident at Lee County Animal Shelter. That may come as a shock when you admire how beautiful he is, but the reason why is because of his “kennel presence”.

Kennel presence is the term used to describe a dog’s behavior in their kennel and is often what makes a first impression. Champ may have a loud and scary kennel presence, but as soon as he is away from that concrete cell, he is the sweetest boy. Being in a shelter for as long as he has been can cause kennel stress, but it’s all the more reason he deserves to make it out.

Champ has been at Lee County for almost two years. He is a young adult and believed to be a shepherd mix. He has been waiting a long time to be chosen. Please help share his story.

We are code red for every pet on property. We have 290 in our care and a waiting list to come in. Our rescue partners are full, vet appointments can’t keep up. We need to move animals asap.

We offer foster to adopt ( 2 week trial period to see if pet is best fit for your home ), we need 3 month fosters for dogs with heartworms, fosters who can take puppies until rescue is found all supplies provided.

We need volunteers. Dogs need to be walked, photos taken, groomed. Cats need to be socialized, clean their rooms. Laundry to be done, dishes to be done. So so much.

We need rescue partners who can pull dogs or kittens. All are vaccinated, dewormed, deflead, microchipped on intake most have multiple sets of vaccines, most dogs are fixed.

We desperately need to move animals. There is no more waiting.

AUGUST 2025 SHELTER TOUR
📍 Fairfield County Animal Control and Adoption Center - Winnsboro, SC

For our August shelter tour, we toured Fairfield County Animal Shelter located in Winnsboro, South Carolina. Although the shelter has a newer building where many of their adoptable animals currently are located, they are still far over capacity, which means they have to utilize outdoor kennels for the rest of their dogs and also use their old facility for overflow. The majority of their dogs are located in outdoor kennels on a concrete slab. Yes, this means that they are living through the elements year-round. The shelter’s indoor kennels are filled with puppies and their most adoptable dogs.

The team here at Fairfield County works really hard. It was abundantly clear that all of these animals are so loved and are taken very good care of, however, living life on a concrete slab outside is not ideal. Unfortunately, it’s the community that has failed them as they do not spay or neuter their pets, and then the unwanted animals wind up here hoping and praying to eventually make it out.

We fell in love with so many dogs during our shelter tour, but could only take two into rescue due to limited space. If you see a dog that you like, they are most likely still there at the shelter, and we highly suggest you inquire about adopting.

The county does have some exciting news… they have a brand-new nonprofit that is going to be dedicated to moving dogs out of the shelter for Fairfield County. It is called Hearts Unleashed, and you can give them a follow here:

DANICA 📍 Fairfield County Animal Control and Adoption Center - Winnsboro, SC

Meet Danica! Sometimes a dog really tugs at your heart when you see them in the shelter, and Danica did that for us. She is a middle aged female hound and is beautiful and sweet. She was found as a stray and never reclaimed, and now she sits day after day in the shelter. The only reason we can think a dog like her is still waiting for a rescue or adoption is because she’s a black adult. Unfortunately, black dogs have a much harder time making it out of the shelter.

Danica is healthy, affectionate, dog friendly. She is available for adoption (or for rescue) at Fairfield County Animal Shelter!

You can reach out to if interested!

24 hours a day.

Thats how long puppies have to sit in kennels in most rural shelters. Every moment of every day. It’s a real life hell.

These puppies here are at The Dillon County Animal Shelter Dillon County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services in South Carolina. There just simply aren’t enough staff and volunteers. The most attention the puppies get is the few moments that it takes to clean kennels, and even then, it’s barely anything at all.

A puppy’s prime socialization period is 8-12 weeks old. Instead of learning about house training, snuggling on the couch, or frolicking through the grass in the yard of their forever home, the puppies sit in a cage 24 hours a day - praying they’ll make it out.

Our team saw this is in person and knew we had to spend our day helping the puppies. We spent hours cleaning their kennels as much as possible, and then bathing them before having to put them back. Not that there is any good part to what we witnessed on this day, but watching the puppies sleep peacefully after getting a bath and a clean kennel made us feel like we made a big difference for them that day.

Please consider fostering or adopting, and if you can’t, volunteer your time to your local shelter. They need you.
