Today is World Rabies Day! This day is to raise awareness, education and to encourage all communities, world wide, to come together to help work towards the elimination of rabies. Here are some important facts to know about rabies.
Rabies is a zoonotic virus (it can pass from animals to humans) and targets the nervous system. If untreated and symptoms begin, it is always fatal.
Transmission can occur from bites and scratches from an infected animal.
The most common animals in North America that can carry rabies are raccoons, skunks, and bats.
Rabies is 100% preventable with vaccination. Illinois, along with most other states, require all dogs and cats to be vaccinated for rabies.
If you suspect you or your pet have come in contact with the virus contact your doctor and/or WAH immediately for treatment.
