Did you give your pet their heartworm prevention this month?

Myth: My pet is indoor only. They won't get heartworm.
Fact: Mosquitos can come in your home and infect your pets with heartworm. It only takes one bite from a mosquito to infect them.

Myth: It is cold outside, so the mosquitos are not out to infect my pet.
Fact: Mosquito can infect pets year around. They can be active above 50°F. The midwest late fall/winters do have random warm days above 50°F.

Fact: Via Companion Animal Parasite Council in 2025
1 in 100 dogs in the United States tested positive for heartworm disease.
1 in 200 dogs in Illinois tested positive for heartworm disease.

This is why our clinic recommends to give heartworm prevention year around. Not just in the warm months.

This picture was taken at 7:00pm today, from one of our technician's. At that time it was 47°F outside. (Note: It was located in her master bathroom. She has a tri-level home. So the mosquito either had to travel all throughout her home, or had come through her bathroom ceiling fan.)

Do you prefer the monthly Inteceptor Plus chewable tablet (that prevents heartworm and intestinal parasites), or yearly proheart injection (that only prevents heartworm)?

Today is Pet Obesity Awareness Day!
If your pet is obese, they are at risk of getting joint problems (arthritis), respiratory compromise (collapsing trachea), diabetes mellitus, hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver), increased surgical/anesthetic risk, reduced life span, etc.

Some factors are genetics, overfeeding in meals/treats, children in the home feeding extra food, low metabolism, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), etc.

If you're concerned your pet is obese, speak with your veterinarian to get guidance to help your pet lose weight.
