Good manners around food aren’t simply about teaching horses to honor our space or wait patiently. Manners go both ways. Natural instincts can become especially strong with food. Working with Annie in this way helps build communication & trust without losing our relationship in the process.

It’s not just, β€œDoes my horse have good manners?” It’s also, β€œDo I?”

The homeschoolers & I were enthralled watching Pumpkin, Coco & Sweet Tea running, chasing, playing yesterday in this fall horse weather. These behaviors help them practice important social cues and develop bonds within the herd, & also engage in physical activity for their health.

Prayers Request:

Spirit has laminitis in all four hooves.
The increased heat & digital pulse appeared in one hoof & I thought we were dealing with an abscess. Looking back, it feels like a perfect storm. We're giving him all we got the next 30 days with stall rest, pain mgmt, therapeutic hoof support to see how he stabilizes. It's been a heartbreaking week, and we are all trying to be hopeful.

Spirit has been a hardy, easy keeper in his near 5 years with me at Egret Paradise. Visitors know of "Spirit's Tree" & "Spirit's pasture" & that he lives amongst a senior herd that took him in and helped him heal. Colonel Mac means a great deal to him and it's always been a tie that binds us.

He went from being the horse whose health I took for granted to needing intensive care overnight. This has been a humbling experience. There are moments when I sink into how I've failed him and every what if. But Spirit needs me here with him today & to embrace what he is showing...stay present, receive the care around us, & take it one moment at a time.

We're grateful to the Egret Paradise village that has been there for us this week, & very special thanks to Terri, Jennifer, Jazmynn, my parents & Nathan. Thank you to our farrier Andrew and Dr. Laura for helping us navigate his care.

Please keep our golden boy in your heart & prayers. Here he is getting a stall check-in from his buddy Jackson. Tomorrow Emma & Courtney visit πŸ’›

Years ago, I was introduced to Carolyn Resnick's pioneering liberty horsemanship. It completely transformed the way I see and interact with horses. It's a journey of trusting when to lead, when to follow, and when to pause.

The Resnick Method Liberty Horsemanship shapes everything we do here with the horses & with the people who come here seeking connection and a deeper understanding of these incredible animals.

I'm forever grateful to Carolyn Resnick for developing this way with horses and to Nancy Zintsmaster for her mentorship and guidance.

Colonel Mac's new favorite grooming tool is a kid's plastic rake. Sometimes the simplest things bring the greatest relief, especially in these hot, humid North Carolina summers. Spirit is observing in the background. Yes, he was next in line.πŸ’™

Every herd has an unspoken language.

Horses naturally respect one another's space, communicate with subtle body language, and seek cooperation rather than conflict. They don't rely on force, they rely on clarity, awareness, and mutual understanding.

The greatest teachers are often the horses themselves.

🐴 What is one lesson your horse has taught you without words?

🌿 Summer Schedule Update 🌿

During the heat of July and August, we're putting the well-being of both our horses & our guests first.

🐴 Herd Meet & Greets will be offered in a limited capacity during the early mornings and evenings when temperatures are more safe & comfortable.

πŸͺ» Our private horsemanship sessions, nature-based women's wellness classes, and special events will return in September as the weather begins to cool.

🌳 In the meantime, I'll continue sharing updates from the herd, along with educational horsemanship posts & nature moments here at Egret Paradise.

Wishing you a wonderful, safe, & cool summer! 😎 The herd & I look forward to welcoming you back this fall. πŸ’™, Lauren

As the leader of our herd, he carries a lot. Colonel Mac deserves time where he can put the weight down.

Mac has taught me over the years that strength is knowing when it's safe to let go. I'm grateful he trusts me to share space, breathe deeply, and rest with him. I needed it too...

He has been through so much. I πŸ’™ him to this summer full moon and back.
