🐾 Kitten Season is Here – What You Need to Know 🐾
Spring and summer bring an influx of tiny, adorable kittens—but it also means our shelters are quickly overwhelmed. During “kitten season,” we need our community’s help more than ever to give these babies the best chance at survival.
If you come across a litter of kittens, your first instinct may be to scoop them up, but in many cases, the best thing you can do is leave them where they are.
🐱 Here’s why:
Mama cats often leave their kittens for hours at a time while they search for food. She is their best chance at survival, providing warmth, nutrition, and protection that humans simply can’t replicate.
⏳ What should you do instead?
• Observe from a distance for several hours (up to 6–8 if possible) to see if mom returns
• Make sure the kittens are in a safe, dry spot
• Keep pets and people away so mom feels comfortable coming back
🚨 When should you step in?
• If the kittens appear sick, injured, or are in immediate danger
• If you are certain the mother has not returned after extended observation
• If the kittens are cold, crying nonstop, or visibly injured.
🍼 Important reminders:
• Do NOT give kittens cow’s milk—it can make them very sick!
• Neonatal kittens require round-the-clock care and specialized feeding
