Hey everyone! Here is my yearly reminder to don't be an idiot when it comes to extreme temps. Our dogs are not indestructible and just because they have a "fur coat" doesn't mean they are going to stay comfortable when the temps drop to extreme lows. If you factor in the wind and snow cover sensitive areas like paws, ears and noses are extra susceptible to injury from the cold. As always I will be continuing the fun with the dogs all winter long but make adjustments to how long the dogs may spend outside and what type of footing and areas we are visiting. I always have extra coats on hand if you forget to send snow clothes to school! When the dogs are out together they are generally moving very quickly and generating lots of body heat but I still stay mindful of exposure time and watch everyone for signs of discomfort. If you are walking your dog on any surfaces treated for ice and snow I would reccomend wiping paw pads off well with a warm wet cloth to remove salt and chemicals and investing in some pad conditioning ointment to use as well.
