Responsible Pet Ownership Month is a time to recognize the important role pets play in our families and communities—and to reaffirm our responsibility to keep them healthy, safe, and protected. Responsible pet ownership means more than just having a pet—it means providing consistent, adequate care every day.

Adequate care includes:
• Fresh, clean food and water
• Safe shelter from the elements
• Regular access to veterinary care
• Routine grooming and good hygiene

It also means never dumping or abandoning unwanted animals. Abandonment puts animals, families, and communities at risk. If you are unable to keep your pet, there are responsible and humane options. Please work with one of our many rescue organizations so they can receive proper care and have a chance to find a new home or surrender your pet at your local Animal Control Shelter.

When we meet these responsibilities, we help prevent neglect, reduce suffering, and build safer, healthier communities for both people and animals.

Responsible Pet Ownership Month is a time to recognize the important role pets play in our families and communities—and to reaffirm our responsibility to keep them healthy, safe, and protected. Proper pet care includes adequate food, shelter, medical attention, and safe living conditions—but it also means making sure your pets can make it home if they are lost.

One of the best ways to protect your dogs and cats is by 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠. A microchip is a small device placed under your pet’s skin for identification purposes. If your pet is found and taken to a shelter, they can be scanned for a microchip, and the identification number can be used to reunite you with your pet. 𝙋𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧: 𝙖 𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚—𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙄𝘿 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙨 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚.

Navajo Nation Animal Control Law requires pets to be microchipped, and keeping your contact information up to date is an important part of responsible pet ownership.

Responsible Pet Ownership Month is a time to recognize the important role pets play in our families and communities—and to reaffirm our responsibility to keep them healthy, safe, and protected. Proper pet care includes adequate food, shelter, medical attention, and safe living conditions—but it also means keeping our communities safe.

As the weather gets warmer, more people will be walking, exercising, and spending time outdoors. For everyone’s safety, please—t’áá shoodí—tether your dogs or keep them confined within a fenced area. Loose dogs can lead to bites, attacks, and serious injuries to children, elders, neighbors, and other animals. Navajo Nation Animal Control Law requires dogs to be confined by leash or fence.

Together, we can prevent bites and attacks, protect our families, and create safer homes, healthier animals, and stronger communities—starting with responsible pet ownership.

Responsible Pet Ownership Month is a time to recognize the important role pets play in our families and communities—and to reaffirm our responsibility to keep them healthy, safe, and protected. Proper pet care includes adequate food, shelter, medical attention, and safe living conditions.

A key function of responsible pet ownership is ensuring your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Rabies is a deadly but preventable disease, and vaccinating your pets helps protect your family, your community, and your animals.

We encourage all pet owners to become familiar with Navajo Nation Animal Control laws, which states that pets three (3) months of age or older are required to be vaccinated against rabies.

The Navajo Nation Rabies Tag issued also serves as your Navajo Nation Pet License and must be renewed every year. Please keep your pet’s health records so you can provide proof of vaccination if needed.

Responsible Pet Ownership Month is a time to recognize the important role pets play in our families and communities, and to reaffirm our responsibility to care for them humanely and responsibly. This month serves as a reminder that proper pet care—including adequate food, shelter, medical attention, and safe living conditions—helps in preventing neglect, reduces overpopulation, reduces strain on shelters, and supports healthier, safer communities for both people and animals.

Navajo Nation Animal Control reminds all pet owners that while our Animal Control Officers continue to serve in the field and keep our shelters operating, we need your assistance in ensuring your pets receive proper care, supervision, and attention.

We encourage all pet owners to become familiar with Navajo Nation Animal Control laws. Under Resolution 𝐂𝐉𝐘-𝟔𝟒-𝟏𝟖, 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 (𝟒) 𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 (𝟒) 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬. These limits are in place to promote humane care, prevent overcrowding, and ensure pets can receive adequate food, shelter, and veterinary attention.

Pet owners living in housing subdivisions must comply with pet limits established by their housing agency, not to exceed Navajo Nation pet limit laws.

Together, we can create safer homes, healthier animals, and stronger communities through responsible pet ownership.

As we welcome the New Year, please keep in mind that loud fireworks and celebrations can be frightening for pets. Keep your animals safe by following these tips:
🐾 Keep pets indoors during fireworks and celebrations
🐾 Secure gates, doors, and fences to prevent escapes
🐾 Create a quiet, comfortable space where pets can feel safe
🐾 Make sure pets are wearing proper identification or are microchipped
🐾 Never leave pets tied up or unattended outside

If your pet becomes lost, contact your local Animal Control Shelter as soon as possible.

🎅🏼MERRY CHRISTMAS🎄

Navajo Nation Animal Control wishes our communities a safe and peaceful holiday season. May the season bring kindness, balance, and renewal.

We appreciate you doing your part in caring for your pets and encourage everyone to continue being responsible pet owners. Thank you for helping keep our animals and communities healthy.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Navajo Nation Zoo and Climate Change program for partnering with us to bring holiday joy to the children at Hogan Hozhoni Christian Childcare. Through this event, we were able to provide vaccinations for 230 dogs 🐶 and 63 cats 🐱, and all donated gifts were gratefully received and delivered. Thank you to everyone who helped make this special event possible.

Join Navajo Nation Animal Control and Navajo Nation Zoo on Saturday, December 20, 2025 for a special Vaccination Toy Drive benefiting our community! Help keep pets healthy while bringing joy to a child this holiday season.

🎁 Toy Drive: Pet owners are encouraged to donate ONE (1) unwrapped toy for a child 2 months to 10 years of age, PER PET.
🎁 All donated toys will benefit Hogan Hozhoni Christian Child Care.
