Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals MSSPA, founded in 1872, protects the health and welfare of neglected and abused equines.

The Society houses horses who have suffered from abuse or neglect and have been seized by Maine law enforcement agents. ciety is entirely funded by donations, bequests, grants, and fund-raising activities. MSSPA does not charge for its services and seeks no reimbursement from any public source. Focus on the Farm is coming right up! Grab a drink at the horse trailer bar, stroll around the paddocks, and meet the herd. We hope you will join us for this celebration of the horses and the amazing ways they inspire us. The event happens right here at the farm, 279 River Road in Windham at 4 pm on Sunday, September 13th. Blue Elephant Events & Catering and The Roaming Speakeasy Co will once again provide food and drink - and this year our auction has expanded. Alongside the gorgeous photography, we've got amazing items to bid on - gorgeous pottery, birding at the farm, horsebackriding on the beach, learn to sail, learn to knit, stay in a Yurt, camping gear,a photography session for your pet, a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walking stick -- and so much more! The Society will also be auctioning off a one week stay at a beautiful home in the Outer Banks. While plenty of kiddos are filling their backpacks with pencils and notebooks, sweet little Pepperjack is going through his own 'back-to-school' transition as it is time to wean him from Momma Diane. He is already four months old! And that little pint-size donkey is full of mischief. He is ready to begin this new chapter and the MSSPA staff is slowly weaning him from his momma. While this is new territory for this little guy, Diane seems to be (dare we say) savoring some time to herself! She has been the best - and most patient -- momma. And our goal for Pepperjack - as with all the equines in the herd - is to get him ready to be adopted to his forever home. After he is fully weaned, he will be gelded; once he is fully healed from that procedure, it will be time to help Pepperjack find his forever home! MSSPA Staffer Morgan talked with us a bit about what goes into the weaning process and why.

Well, they did it again -- and outdid themselves from last year (and that is no small feat!)! These kids are AMAZING. They are part of "Robin's Nest," a day care extraordinaire in Limington. Each summer they host a series of lemonade stands, and their neighborhood turns out enthusiastically and generously. These are no ordinary lemonade stands; they sell whoopie pies, and cookies, they make crafts, hair scrunchies, and just about anything else you can think of along with lemonade. The planning and preparation that goes into these 'stands' happens year-round, and for the last two years, the MSSPA has been the incredibly fortunate recipient of this dynamic effort. This summer these adorable, tireless, pint-size entrepreneurs raised $1077.00! All for the horses. We love to welcome these amazing kiddos to the farm to visit the herd they so generously support. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

When a horse arrives in unimaginably poor health, or is pulled from conditions that defy humanity, (or - sadly - both), they simply take up residence in our collective hearts as we work to restore them to good health. Such was the case with Gibson. He had no reason to have the will to live, or to trust that humans would ever treat him with kindness. And yet, this brave boy, after being removed from high atop a stall impacted with years of his own manure, stepped carefully off the trailer and into the safe embrace of the McCulloch Family Barn.
That was eight months ago.
Gibson had a hard winter. Having been confined to a stall before he was seized, he had not grown a winter coat. Severely thin and malnourished, critically deficient in essential nutrients, and battling an extreme case of Lyme disease, his body was struggling on every level. Muscle loss, weakness, and neurological symptoms made even simple movement uncertain. He had an uphill battle from the moment he arrived at the MSSPA.
Staff, along with veterinarian Martha K. Smith Dvm worked tirelessly to support this boy, and give him the tools he needed to recover. Gibson was one of those horses that seemed to encounter a new challenge each time he made progress. His care going forward will require focused attention and skill, and he has already come so far.
Eight months in -- Gibson is doing so well. This incredible Standardbred is a shining example of the life-saving work that happens here at the MSSPA. He has joined the herd, and shares a paddock with Kevin. His coat is shiny, and he has gained nearly 120 lbs. He is stable and ready to be adopted, and begin the next chapter of his life with all the love and care that a future adopter can provide.

If you have ever loved an animal and felt the specific, profound weight of losing that animal, 'Hands + Hearts: Memorial Art and Grief Circle' - a workshop here at the MSSPA - might be for you. Facilitated by one of our extraordinary volunteers, Jessica Dolce, MS, Certified Compassion Fatigue and Grief Educator, Pet Loss Group Specialist, and her colleague, this workshop will move through two experiences designed to complement each other and honor the life of a special animal: first, making something with your hands, and then, sharing from your heart. Jessica has done this work with the MSSPA staff - as dealing with loss is part of the work that happens here; she is remarkable and gifted. The workshop happens right here at the farm on Saturday, September 26th from 10am - 1pm, 279 River Road in Windham. A portion of the proceeds of this workshop will be donated in support of the horses.
