**🐶 Why Do Some Dogs Get Tear Stains?**
Those reddish-brown stains under the eyes are common, especially in small or light-colored dogs like Maltese, Shih Tzus, Poodles, and Bulldogs. While often cosmetic, tear staining can sometimes signal an underlying issue.
Common Causes of Tear Staining:
🔹 **Excess tearing (epiphora)**
Tears overflow when they aren’t draining properly.
🔹 **Blocked or narrow tear ducts**
Common in flat-faced breeds.
🔹 **Hair irritation**
Hair rubbing against the eyes can trigger extra tearing.
🔹 **Allergies or irritation**
Environmental allergies, smoke, dust, or perfumes may contribute.
🔹 **Eye infections or inflammation**
Redness, squinting, odor, or discharge should be checked by a veterinarian.
🔹 **Normal tear pigments**
Tears contain compounds called porphyrins that can leave reddish-brown staining, especially on white fur.

# # # Ways to Help Reduce Tear Staining:
✅ Keep the fur around the eyes trimmed and dry
✅ Gently clean the area daily with a soft cloth or pet-safe eye wipe. Good brands include Optixcare or Lid N Lash
✅ Address underlying allergies or eye disease
✅ Ask your veterinarian whether additional diagnostics are appropriate
# # # When Should You See a Vet?
Schedule an exam if you notice:
• Squinting or eye redness
• Thick or colored discharge
• Odor or skin irritation
• Sudden increase in tearing
• Your pet rubbing at the eyes
Healthy eyes should be comfortable, clear, and free of pain — not just stain-free. 💙
