After my sad post about Khaleesi, I want to bring attention to something not exactly spider related, but sort of… let’s talk crabs!
Now, I personally don’t know much regarding husbandry of crabs, but I’ve always considered them “spiders” of the sea. While I eat crab occasionally, I have also grown quite fond of them through content creators, specifically Laura Porter (howiethecrab is her main page but I can’t tag it for some reason.)
People like Laura have been able to show an incredible side to crabs. They definitely are much more intelligent than anyone gives them credit for. They seem to actually make great pets and seem to be extremely capable of bonding with humans, just like some spiders (particularly jumpers.) I would like to echo Laura and say that I obviously don’t mind those who eat crab, but would also like to bring awareness to humane unaliving prior to cooking them. Crabs for sure seem to have feeling and understanding, so please do not cook them alive if you choose to eat them, especially if you have control of how they are being prepared for meals. On the opposite side, if you have been interested in crab keeping and are capable of keeping up with their husbandry needs, I highly recommend them as pets as well after seeing how they are capable of bonding with humans. Keep in mind that some can live quite long lives before considering taking them on as pets.
I also want to give a huge shoutout to Friendliest Catch. This guy catches crab for meals, but he also deeply cares for them. A true crab whisperer and barnacle detective. The things I’ve learned about crabs and different ocean life through his channel has been awesome. One of the main things he shows on his page is actually helping crabs in bad conditions. He helps crabs heavily infested with barnacles, removes the barnacles and the mud worms, feeds all the pregnant moms, and even some males in conditions too bad for restaurant standards, as well as explaining other sea life that sometimes gets caught in his crab traps, all of which are released. His guarantee through his channel is to make you 25% friendlier, and who could argue with that?
I’ve really been enjoying learning about crabs. While I don’t particularly plan to ever keep one as a pet, I have gained so much respect for them through multiple sides of the crab community.
Again, please consider the intelligence of wild life and be sure if prepping any living thing for a meal that you are doing so humanely. I would never pretend that I don’t eat meat or seafood, but I do believe that their lives matter. I am thankful to all life that provide us nutrition, but also believe there is proper respect and preparation that should be considered when we eat living creatures, and no living creature should be boiled alive imo.
Anyway, a little different than my normal posts. If you felt led, I recommend giving both of these content creators a follow. They are both great educators for the crab community. Again, I feel a special love for crabs as I feel they relate to spiders in the ocean world.
I’m dedicating this post to Winny the Crab, a rescue that Laura took on and cared extremely well for over the past 1.5 years. She had Howie before Winny for those who don’t know her. Howie was taken in as a baby and lived an incredibly happy life for over 10 years under Laura’s care and love. Winny made it a year and a half with Laura, and she was a rescue. Laura has the best crab husbandry that I’ve probably ever witnessed regarding keeping them as pets. She is extremely interactive with them and they are truly family to her.
