Faline and her mom Liberty after a rough start in life are now thriving after rescue this summer. Liberty initially couldn't walk or stand from neglect and has a highly contagious incurable disease. After many hard hours of intensive medical care and rehabilitation, she regained strength and the ability to walk and run!🎉 If she had given birth to Faline before rescue they both would have most likely died. Now they can share a quiet moment together basking in the autumn sun. This is why they matter, this is why rescue matters.

PFS was honored yesterday to be one of the nonprofits chosen by the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley for a grant towards our animal-assisted neurodivergence & emotional trauma therapy program! Thank you so much for your support towards this urgently needed mental health program, providing therapy at no cost to the participants.

Yesterday was the most wonderful day of the year for CFNSVN for many nonprofits in our region. We awarded 61 grants totaling more than $200,000. A big thank you to Clem’s Kitchen at the Wayside Inn in Middletown for hosting our annual Philanthropy Day Luncheon. Such a magical place to thank the donors who support our mission and celebrate local nonprofits doing exceptional work in the NSV.

One of our old timer Cornish friends, enjoying an extra warm autumn day.🥰🐔
Bred to get as large as possible as quick as possible, they're normally killed at 6-8 weeks old when biologically they're still immature. The breed was created from an animal agriculture contest in the late 40s-50s to meet the new US demand for chicken meat and the new era of convenience and selfishly wanting things now. This was the same era that gave rise to fast food and TV dinners. Eating chicken flesh was new in the US at this time, previously chickens were raised for eggs or companions. During WWII to save and ration red meat for the war effort, the US government created a propaganda advertising campaign to convince the public to eat chickens and to this day chicken is the most consumed animal in the US and nearly all of them are the Cornish Cross. In addition to being bred to binge eat and quickly get obese, these birds were also bred to have low feather density to make it cheaper to process their bodies at the slaughterhouse and to have white plumage. This is because the skin follicle where feathers grow from have a freckle of color that matches the color of the feather and the meat industry quickly learned the public was turned off by freckled skin, it made it too clear they were eating a former living being. White freckles on the skin appear invisible. Sadly these birds have weaker immune systems and death from heart failure isn't uncommon; they frequently need foot and leg surgeries also due to their weight. If you asked us to pick the animal used in agriculture that our hearts break for the most, it would be the Cornish Cross- we have purposely done all this harm to them without care or consideration for purely selfish motives.

*Newborn goats are killed on goat dairy farms
*Goat dairy farms are the fastest growing sector of animal agriculture in the US
*Large scale CAFO or factory farms can cram more goats into an overcrowded area than cattle dairy farms can
*Goat horns are burned off when born with a tool that reaches 1,000 degrees. This frequently causes brain damage and is done without any pain management
