Grooming Is Wellness, Not Vanity

A grooming visit is about so much more than a clean coat. It is healthy skin, cleaner ears, trimmed nails, better comfort, and the chance to catch little issues before they become bigger ones.

At Ridgeside K9 Grooming, we believe grooming is part of keeping your dog happy, healthy, and feeling their best from nose to tail.

Cool Coat, Happy Dog

1. De-shed double coats instead of shaving them, and if a single coat is clipped for summer comfort, leave protective coat length rather than shaving to the skin.

2. Brush before every bath and increase summer brush-outs with coat-matched tools: slicker + comb for double/curly coats, undercoat rake for dense undercoat, pin/metal comb for long silky coats, and rubber/bristle tools for short coats.

3. Set bath frequency by coat, activity, and skin status; monthly is a reasonable starting point for many dogs, while active or allergy-prone dogs may need more frequent baths.

4. Keep summer drying heat-safe by using high-velocity or forced-air dryers on cool/low settings, drying dense or curly coats completely, and scheduling heavy coats, flat-faced dogs, seniors, or medically fragile dogs in the coolest part of the day.

5. Make every summer groom a skin-and-parasite exam: check ears, toes, under the collar, armpits, tail, and groin; brush/bathe to reduce pollen and flea load

6 Hidden Tick Spots You Do Not Want to Miss!

Ticks are tiny, but they know exactly where to hide. Check deep inside the ears, between the toes, under the collar, in the armpits, around the tail, and in the groin area; especially after walks, hikes, or outdoor play.

A quick tick check can make a big difference in keeping your dog comfortable and protected. Save this post for your next outdoor adventure.

👉4 Myths About Fleas & Ticks👈

1. **Myth: Fleas and ticks are only a problem in the warmer months.** While it's true that fleas and ticks are more active during warmer months, they can live indoors and in warm microenvironments year-round, so protection should be a year-round concern.

2. **Myth: Indoor pets don't need flea and tick prevention.** Even indoor pets are at risk for fleas and ticks, which can be brought into the home on clothing, other pets, or pests like mice. It’s important to use preventive measures for all pets, regardless of their lifestyle.

3. **Myth: If you don't see fleas or ticks, your pet is safe.** Fleas and ticks can be very small and hard to detect, especially in the early stages of infestation or if your pet has a thick coat. Preventive treatment is crucial even if you don't see signs of fleas or ticks.

4. **Myth: A tick must be attached for 24 hours to transmit diseases.** While the risk of disease transmission increases with the length of time a tick is attached, some diseases can be transmitted in less time. For example, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease typically require at least 24 hours to transmit, but other pathogens, like those causing Anaplasmosis or Powassan virus disease, may be transmitted more quickly. It's crucial to remove ticks as soon as they are found.

Bichon Frise, Big Fluff, Fresh Feel 🐾

At Ridgeside K9 Grooming, we love pampering small dogs with the gentle care they deserve. If your Bichon Frise is ready for a fresh, fluffy spa day, book your appointment today by visiting our website or calling us today!
