We all know enrichment is important for pets, but what does that actually mean?
A lot of people immediately think of puzzle toys or lick mats, and those are great tools, but enrichment can also be really simple, natural things that allow pets to engage in normal instincts and behaviors.
For cats, that can include climbing, hiding, watching birds through a window, sniffing new things, shredding cardboard, or even chewing on cat grass.
I recently bought some seeds to grow cat grass for my cat, Hobby Lobby, and it has been a huge hit. Cat grass is usually made from pet-safe grasses like wheat, oat, rye, or barley, and it’s incredibly easy to grow with a little water and sunlight.
Many cats enjoy chewing on it, especially indoor cats. It can provide mental stimulation, satisfy their urge to nibble on plants, and may even help with digestion and hairballs for some cats. I also love that it gives them a safe “yes” plant instead of risking them chewing on houseplants that may not be pet safe.
Sometimes enrichment doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Sometimes it’s just finding small ways to make your pet’s world a little more interesting.
Now if I could just remember to water it. 🫠
