No Tricks, Just Treats: 6 Ways to Keep Pets Safe This Halloween🎃

1. Keep candy out of reach. Chocolate can be dangerous for dogs, and sugar-free candy or gum may contain xylitol, which can be extremely dangerous to pets. Candy wrappers can also present a choking or intestinal-obstruction risk.

2. Watch the front door. Frequent trick-or-treaters, ringing doorbells and open doors can make even normally calm pets anxious—or give them an opportunity to slip outside. Consider keeping pets in a quiet room away from the entrance during peak trick-or-treating hours.

3. Make sure identification is current. Halloween is a smart reminder to check that collars, tags and microchip information are up to date, particularly because doors may be opening frequently throughout the night.

4. Costumes should prioritize comfort. If your pet wears a costume, make sure it doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, hearing or vision. 5. Avoid small accessories that could be chewed off or swallowed. If your pet seems uncomfortable, a festive bandana may be a better option.

5. Keep decorations pet-friendly. Candles and jack-o’-lanterns can be knocked over, while electrical cords, fake cobwebs and small decorative pieces can become hazards for curious pets.

6. Create a calm space. Costumes, unfamiliar visitors and repeated doorbells can be stressful. Give pets access to a familiar, quiet space with their bed, water and favorite toy.

Save this checklist for your pet’s next nose-to-tail check! 🐾🍂

As you settle into your fall routine, take a few minutes during cuddle time to check these five areas:

👀 Eyes: Notice any unusual redness, excessive tearing, discharge or changes around the eyes?

👂 Ears: Check for redness, unusual odor or excessive wax, and pay attention to frequent scratching or head shaking.

🦷 Teeth + gums: Look for plaque buildup, noticeably bad breath, red or irritated gums, or changes in chewing habits. A little attention here is a great reminder to keep dental care part of your everyday routine!

🐕 Skin + coat: Gently part the fur in a few spots to look for dry or flaky skin, redness, bumps or changes in the coat. Keep an eye on extra scratching, too.

🐾 Paws: Check between the toes and around paw pads for cracks, cuts, irritation or debris caught in the fur.

Getting familiar with what’s normal for your pet can help you notice when something changes. Spot something unusual? Check in with your veterinarian.

📌 Save this post to keep the checklist handy, and share it with a fellow pet parent!

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month, making it a perfect time to check in on the everyday habits that help our dogs live safe, healthy and happy lives. 🐶💚

A responsible pet parent makes time for:
✔️ Identification: Keep your dog’s collar tags and microchip information accurate and up to date.
✔️ Veterinary care: Schedule routine wellness exams and stay current on recommended vaccinations, medications and preventive care.
✔️ Exercise and enrichment: Provide daily opportunities for physical activity, play, exploration and mental stimulation based on your dog’s age and abilities.
✔️ Positive training: Reinforce good behavior with patience, consistency and reward-based training that helps your dog feel safe and confident.
✔️ Regular grooming: Maintain a routine that includes bathing, brushing, nail trims, dental care and gentle ear cleaning.
✔️ A safe environment: Provide fresh water, balanced nutrition, secure surroundings and plenty of love, attention and rest.

Responsible dog ownership isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up for your dog and making thoughtful choices for their well-being, day after day.
