Before leaving your pet in someone else’s home, ask one simple question:

ā€œCan I see your current North Carolina boarding kennel license?ā€

Many pet owners don’t realize that in North Carolina, regularly boarding pets or offering dog daycare in a private home generally requires a boarding kennel license issued by the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services.

That license isn’t just a piece of paper. It’s part of a system designed to help ensure facilities meet state standards for housing, sanitation, veterinary care, and oversight.

Choosing an unlicensed provider can come with risks that many people never consider, including questions about oversight, insurance coverage, liability, and what could happen if authorities investigate while your pet is in their care.

Professional pet sitting in your home is different from boarding pets in someone else’s home.

At Tailored Pet Services, we believe pet parents deserve to understand the difference so they can make informed decisions about their pets’ care.

Your pets deserve more than assumptions. They deserve informed choices. 🐾

Automatic feeders and self cleaning litter boxes are incredible tools, but they aren’t pet sitters. 🐈

Cats are masters at hiding illness and injuries. A tipped over water bowl, vomiting, a urinary blockage, a medical emergency, or simply refusing to eat can become serious long before anyone realizes something is wrong.

Technology can make caring for your cat easier, but it should never replace a daily check in from someone you trust.

If you’re heading out of town, give yourself the peace of mind of knowing someone has actually laid eyes on your cat. They’ll thank you for it, even if they pretend not to. šŸ¤

Trust isn’t something we ask for—it’s something we earn. šŸ¤

Inviting someone into your home and trusting them with a member of your family is never a small decision. That’s why we treat every pet as if they were our own and every visit as a promise to provide the same level of care we’d want for our own pets.

Reading reviews like this reminds us why we do what we do.

Thank you, Mary, for trusting us with sweet Diamond and for taking the time to share your experience. It has truly been an honor to care for your little one. 🐾

Either way, I’m just happy to be part of their routine and make sure they’re comfortable, cared for, and loved while their people are away. šŸ¤

One thing I wanted to add after sharing this post…

Not every pet with behavioral challenges or chronic medical issues is being neglected.

Sometimes they’re the product of genetics.
Sometimes they’re the result of their past.
Sometimes they’re simply born with obstacles that no amount of love can erase.

I’ve had people assume I must be doing something wrong because Ivy has so many medical and behavioral challenges. The reality is almost the opposite.

I rescued her knowing she had skin issues and that she wasn’t doing well with the dogs she lived with. What I didn’t know was that we’d spend the next five years working with specialists, trainers, behaviorists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, medications, and lifestyle changes just to help her feel her best.

And if you’re someone who had to make the heartbreaking decision to rehome a pet because you couldn’t meet their needs…

You’re not a failure.

Sometimes loving an animal means recognizing that someone else can provide what you can’t. That’s one of the hardest, most selfless decisions a person can make.

I’m incredibly grateful that I was able to become Ivy’s person, and I’m even more grateful for the amazing support system that has helped us every step of the way.

So today, this is your reminder:

ā¤ļø Don’t judge a pet by its medical record.
ā¤ļø Don’t judge an owner by their pet’s challenges.
ā¤ļø And don’t assume you know someone’s story just by looking at the ending.

You never know what battles someone—and their pet—have already fought together.

Every time a new client apologizes because they think their pet is ā€œa lot,ā€ I smile.

Because I hear that sentence almost every week.

What they don’t know is that I’ve spent the last five years learning how to care for a dog with chronic medical conditions, severe allergies, behavioral challenges, specialist appointments, medications, training, and countless unexpected obstacles.

Ivy has taught me patience.
She has taught me compassion.
She has taught me that every behavior has a reason, every medical condition deserves understanding, and every pet is trying their best.

That’s why I never see pets as ā€œtoo much.ā€

Whether your dog is anxious, reactive, elderly, recovering from surgery, on multiple medications, or just requires a little extra patience—I understand.

Because I’ve lived it.

And I’d be honored to love your pets the same way I love mine. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

šŸ˜‚ All jokes aside, I know everyone wants to save money where they can. But including your cats in the booking ensures they’re covered under our insurance policy and receive the same level of professional care as the dogs. Trust me—they’re usually the ones supervising the whole visit anyway. 🐱🐾
