Bad breath can be more than an inconvenience—it may be a sign of hidden dental pain. 🐾🦷

Gunner’s teeth looked normal from the outside, but years of compulsive chewing had worn several teeth down to the gums, exposing painful tissue beneath. Dogs are remarkably good at hiding discomfort, so problems can progress before we realize anything is wrong.

You’d see a dentist for tooth pain. Your pet deserves the same specialized care.

Schedule an evaluation with Delaware Veterinary Dental Practice and discover the difference veterinary dentistry can make in your pet’s life.

🦷 Not every dental problem is visible above the gumline.

At first glance, this patient's lower incisors appeared healthy, and the owner expected that a routine dental cleaning would be all that was needed.

However, dental X-rays told a very different story.

The radiographs revealed that three of these teeth were fractured below the gumline—damage that could not be seen during a visual examination alone. These hidden fractures can be a significant source of chronic pain and discomfort, even when pets continue to eat and behave normally.

This is why dental radiographs are such an important part of every comprehensive dental procedure. They allow us to identify painful conditions that would otherwise go undetected and ensure our patients receive the treatment they need.

🐾 Pets are experts at hiding pain. Sometimes the most important findings are the ones you can't see.

Even with excellent home care, pets still need regular professional cleanings done by a veterinarian, performed under anesthesia! 🪥🐶

Anesthesia allows the vet to thoroughly examine your pet’s mouth, clean above and below the gumline, take radiographs, and safely remove any diseased teeth if necessary. Cleanings that do not use anesthesia are only able to remove tartar and can cause pain/injury to your pet. Without anesthesia, they miss problems under the gums as well.
