Today is the anniversary of the explosion that occurred at our newly constructed state of the art veterinary medical center. We had spent years in planning and construction and were just a few weeks away from opening. A year ago, we were finishing our punch list and moving in the last pieces of medical equipment, then things changed.

An unexpected accident occurred where a car hit our building breaking a gas line. The building filled with natural gas and within mere minutes, the entire building exploded leaving a devastation that was the largest building disaster in Wilmington's history.

Most teams would have buckled at the knees, but not this team. We held each other up, we supported each other and we got out of bed every day to care for the animals that needed us most. We care about what we do and are thankful we are able to serve our community.

We hold strong to our vision to provide the world class care that pet owners deserve, and we added services over the last year to meet that goal. We provided over 32,000 patient visits since the explosion last year, as testimony to the commitment of this team.

Today is part of our healing process. We will be there for each other, taking time to talk and listen as we continue to process what happened. There will be moments of silence. There will be storytelling. There will be times we may feel distracted in thought. We will offer grace today for the healing process to take place.

When I said things changed, it changed us. We are stronger and more connected because we have gone through something together. We don't always take time to acknowledge this, yet we feel it.

ECVMC is excited to introduce our new Criticalist, Dr. Nystrom, who
received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University before completing his veterinary medical degree from the University of Tennessee. After spending a year in Massachusetts for a rotating internship, he returned to the University of Tennessee for an ECC internship and ECC residency. His current interests include electrolyte derangements and vasopressor therapy.

Dr. Nystrom has always loved animals and followed in his mother’s footsteps when he chose veterinary medicine. His favorite part of being a veterinarian is seeing animals close to death being discharged from the hospital and back home with their owners.
He was born and raised in Cary, NC, and considers himself a true local. In his spare time, Dr. Nystrom enjoys playing soccer and spending time with his wife and three children (2 daughters, 1 son).

🐾 Now Offering Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass (SUB) Procedures

Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center is pleased to introduce Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass (SUB) as a new advanced treatment option for dogs and cats with ureteral obstructions.

A ureteral obstruction prevents urine from flowing normally from the kidney to the bladder and can quickly become a serious medical concern. A SUB device creates a new pathway around the blockage, helping restore urine flow while avoiding surgery directly on the affected ureter.

SUB procedures may be appropriate for pets with:

Ureteral stones, particularly calcium oxalate stones
Ureteral strictures or trauma
Unsuccessful or poorly tolerated ureteral stents
Obstruction affecting one or both ureters

The system also includes a small port beneath the skin that allows the veterinary team to collect sterile urine samples, flush the device, and monitor its function. Because ongoing management is essential, patients require regular follow-up care after placement.

Every pet is different and determining whether a SUB procedure is appropriate requires a thorough evaluation. Pet owners may receive a referral from your primary veterinarian to receive a consultation from Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center to determine if this procedure is appropriate for your pet.

As with any surgical procedure, SUB placement carries potential risks and requires long-term monitoring. Recommendations are based on each patient’s individual condition.*
