It was fantastic to catch up with Cylus, a 12-year-old GSD who I trained 11 1/2 years ago❤️. At the time, he was unpredictable not due to any fault of his own, and his owners' primary concern was his welfare. Following an intensive two-week training program, he established a strong foundation. Maintaining relationships with former clients and preserving cherished moments is personally rewarding. Watching a dog's posture is like learning a whole new language that relies entirely on silent communication.
• Keep an eye out for when your dog stands tall or freezes in place, which often means they are processing a threat or high-stress situation.
• Monitor for sudden stiffness or intense staring, as these indicate your dog has reached a high level of nervous agitation.
• Listen carefully for deep, menacing growls, which are vocal warnings that the previous, quieter signals were ignored.
• Recognize air snaps as a serious boundary marker from your pet, showing they are feeling backed into a corner.
• Avoid reaching out or continuing the interaction once these defensive behaviors appear, because forcing contact usually leads to physical biting.
Staying attentive to these stages helps you intervene long before a conflict escalates.
