UNPOPULAR OPINION: LET PEOPLE RIDE YOUR HORSE. 🐴🔥

Yep. I said it.
If your horse can ONLY be ridden by you… I’m not convinced that’s a broke horse.
Before everybody gets mad, hear me out. 😂
If we’ve actually done our job correctly, our horses should be able to handle different riders, different hands, different balance, and an occasional mistake.

I have people get nervous about getting on my horses because they’re scared they’re going to “wreck” them.
Nobody is going to wreck my horse in 20 minutes.
And if 20 minutes with a nervous beginner can completely undo your horse…
Maybe the problem isn’t the beginner.
Now, does that mean I hand my horse to every idiot who walks through the gate?
Absolutely not. 😂

There’s a difference between being careless and giving someone a controlled opportunity to learn.
Let them make a mistake.
Let them be awkward.
Let them learn what it feels like when a horse actually takes care of them.
Let them experience a horse that forgives them when they don’t get everything right.
Because somebody did that for YOU.
At some point, you were the beginner.
You were the one with the wrong hands, wrong seat, wrong timing and way too much confidence for the amount of knowledge you actually had. 😂

Somebody still put you on a horse.
Somebody trusted a good horse to teach you.
And maybe that horse taught you more in 20 minutes than you could have learned in 20 lessons.

We ALL started as the person who didn’t know what they were doing.
So don’t get so good at riding horses that you forget what it felt like to be the person who was just learning.
Because here’s where I REALLY think we’ve gone wrong:

We spend so much time protecting our horses from beginners that we forget beginners are the future of this industry.
If every good horse is “too special” to let someone learn on…

Where exactly are the next generation of good horsemen supposed to come from?
Your horse doesn’t need to be a babysitter.
But a truly good horse should be able to teach someone something.
And sometimes the best thing you can do for the future of horses isn’t winning another buckle.
It’s putting someone on your horse and giving them the opportunity that someone once gave you.

🔥 So let’s debate it:
Should good horses be ridden by different levels of riders, or should your horse ONLY be ridden by experienced riders?

To me, dog training is about building a relationship and a level of communication where, eventually, my voice is enough. I want my dogs to listen because they understand what I’m asking and trust our relationship—not simply because I have a treat in my hand or a tool on them.
Kugel is a great example of this. I’ve been working with her since she was a puppy, and she’s approaching a year old now. Loose-leash walking, responding to a command with a single ask, and understanding what I expect have simply become part of her everyday life. I don’t have to repeat myself over and over because consistency and repetition have built those behaviors into her.
I absolutely believe treats and training tools have their place, especially in the beginning. There is nothing wrong with using them to help a dog understand what we’re asking. The goal is to gradually wean them out so they become a training aid—not the only reason your dog chooses to participate.
Repetition will always win. You don’t have to completely change your dog overnight. Just focus on being 2% better than you were yesterday. Consistency, patience, and a good relationship will take you farther than any single tool ever could.

It’s that time of year! Dog classes

This guy is coming around very nicely! 🐎
He’s been pretty hard to catch in the pasture, so we’ve been going back to the basics and focusing on gaining control of those feet. Once the feet start moving, the brain starts engaging, and that’s when the learning really happens.
The goal is to help him understand that being with people is the resting place. We’re already seeing some good progress, and hopefully before long we’ll have a lot less drama when it comes time to catch him in the pasture. 👍
