One final "Checking in with Chauncy" 💔
Yesterday, our sweet Chauncy’s journey came to an end as he succumbed to complications from heart disease.
There are some dogs who leave paw prints on your heart, and then there are those rare, once-in-a-lifetime dogs who change the entire course of your life. Chauncy was that dog.
Chauncy had a difficult beginning, facing challenges no dog should ever have to endure. We adopted him early in his journey, never fully realizing that while we were setting out to change his life, he would ultimately change ours in ways we could never have imagined.
His spinal cord injury meant that he would never walk independently, despite all our efforts to help him. But Chauncy never needed to walk to move people. He had a way of reaching hearts, inspiring hope, and reminding everyone who met him that a disability does not define a life, and that a life’s worth is never measured by what a body can or cannot do.
Over the years, Chauncy became a legend in his own right. He appeared in multiple calendars, was featured in the Pit Bull Heroes book by Greg Murray, and made several television appearances. So many people came to know him, cheer him on, and love him. But those accomplishments, wonderful as they were, are only a small part of his story.
Chauncy changed the trajectory of our lives. And in doing so, he changed the lives of countless animals he would never even meet.
Through our journey with him, we discovered just how much rehabilitation could offer animals with mobility challenges—and how difficult it was for families to access those services in our own community. What began as a determination to give one special dog every possible opportunity became a calling.....the development of CVR.
His life inspired us to keep learning, keep pushing boundaries, and build the kind of place where every pet receives compassionate, individualized care and every pet owner feels welcomed, supported, and hopeful. Today, every dog or cat who comes through our doors, every family who finds support, and every patient who gains comfort, strength, or a better quality of life is part of the legacy of one extraordinary dog.
We could not change everything about Chauncy’s circumstances. We could not undo his injury or give him back the ability to walk. But he gave us something far greater than we could have ever planned: purpose, direction, and a reason to build something that would help others long after his own journey began.
To everyone who followed his journey, celebrated him, supported him, and loved him over the years: Thank you! You helped make his life—and his legacy—so incredibly special.
Run free, sweet Chauncy.
You will always be the heart of CVR.
Your work here is not finished, because the gift you left behind will continue through every life we are blessed to help. ❤️ 🐾
