Did you know that urinary stones (uroliths) are common in guinea pigs? These stones, which are made of crystallized minerals, can be found in the kidneys, ureters, bladder (like our friend in these pictures), or urethra! Although we do not know exactly what causes urinary stones, we know that diets rich in calcium likely play a role.

Legume hays, such as alfalfa and clover, are high in calcium and should be fed in moderation in fully grown guinea pigs. Making sure that your guinea pigs have access to plenty of water is also important in preventing urinary stones.

Have questions about urinary stones or caring for your guinea pig? Come visit us; we are always here to help your pets stay happy and healthy!
