🐾 Summer adventures should end with happy memories—not emergency visits.

Blue-green algae can be found in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving water during warm weather. Even a small amount can make a pet seriously ill.

Take a moment to read the information below and help keep your furry family members safe on your next outdoor adventure.

🚗☀️ Just a few minutes can make all the difference.

Every summer, pets suffer from heatstroke after being left in parked vehicles. Before you run "just one quick errand," remember that the inside of a car can become life-threatening faster than you think.

Check out this helpful infographic from the ASPCA and share it with fellow pet owners. Together, we can help keep pets safe this summer! 💙

Please apply these guidelines to our 4-legged friends as well. Please check the daily updates of air quality, and keep pets inside if possible. Outdoor pets should be brought inside or in a temperature controlled garage. Our thoughts are with the devastating loss of our Canadian neighbors.

🚤☀️ Lake Days & Water Safety for Pets ☀️🐾

Nothing says summer in Michigan like spending the day on the lake! While many dogs love to swim, it's important to remember that even strong swimmers can get into trouble.

Before your next boating or beach adventure, keep these safety tips in mind:

🦺 Consider a life jacket.
Even dogs that swim well can become tired, get caught in currents, or struggle getting back onto a boat or dock.

💧 Watch how much water your pet drinks.
Swallowing excessive amounts of lake or pool water while playing can lead to serious health problems.

👂 Dry those ears.
Moisture trapped in the ears after swimming can increase the risk of painful ear infections.

🐕 Know when it's time for a break.
Swimming is hard work! Make sure your pet has opportunities to rest, cool off, and rehydrate throughout the day.

🐾 Watch for "Swimmer's Tail."
Also known as Limber Tail Syndrome, this condition can occur after prolonged swimming or intense activity. Signs include a limp tail, difficulty wagging, and pain near the base of the tail.

🌡️ Remember that water doesn't eliminate the risk of heat-related illness. Bring fresh drinking water, provide shade, and avoid prolonged activity during the hottest parts of the day.

A little preparation can help ensure your pet's lake day is safe, fun, and memorable for all the right reasons!

☀️🐾 Summer Safety Tips for Your Pets 🐾☀️

As temperatures rise, it's important to remember that our pets can suffer from heat-related illnesses much faster than we do. In Michigan, humidity plays a huge role too—it's not just the temperature, but the heat index that can put pets at risk.

Here are a few ways to keep your furry family members safe this summer:

💧 Always bring water, even for short walks or hikes.

🌳 Take frequent breaks in the shade before your pet becomes overheated.

🔥 Avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day. If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.

🏊 Water safety matters, too!
• Consider a life jacket when boating, swimming in lakes, or spending time around deep water—even strong swimmers can get tired.
• Monitor pets while swimming and discourage them from drinking excessive amounts of lake or pool water.
• Watch for signs of ear infections after swimming, especially in dogs prone to ear issues.
• Be aware of "swimmer's tail" (also called limber tail), a painful condition that can occur after prolonged swimming or heavy tail use.

⚠️ Watch for signs of heat stroke:
• Excessive panting
• Bright red gums
• Weakness or dizziness
• Vomiting or retching
• Refusing water
• Collapse

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool area immediately and seek veterinary care as soon as possible.

Remember: your dog doesn't need to train for a summer marathon just because you do! If you're starting a new exercise routine, your pet may be happier staying home in the air conditioning.
