This is the update we prayed we would never have to make.

Little Fuego passed away today.

Dr. Andy called to let us know that Fuego made it through the amputation surgery, but while being woken up afterward, she went into cardiac arrest. The veterinary team did everything they could to save her, administering every medication they safely could for a kitten that small, but despite their efforts, they were unable to bring her back.

The infection had spread far beyond what we could see on the surface. Combined with her tiny size and fragile condition, it was simply too much for her little body to overcome.

The hardest part is knowing there was no other option. Without the surgery, the infection would have continued to spread and would have taken her life anyway. We were told from the beginning that this was a possibility, and we knew the risks. But when there is even the smallest chance to save a life, we have to try.

Fuego never got the chance to know what it felt like to be healthy. She never got to grow up, find a family, or live the life she deserved. But she did know warmth, safety, a full belly, medical care, and people who fought for her until the very end.

Sometimes rescue ends in heartbreak, no matter how hard everyone tries.

Run free, sweet Fuego. 🌈🐾

You were loved. You mattered. And we are so sorry we couldn’t save you. ❤️

💔 Update on Fuego 💔

Our sweet little Fuego received some difficult news today.

Despite everyone’s hopes and the care she’s been receiving, her leg is not improving. The tissue has continued to die, and the leg has now become necrotic. Because of this, the veterinary team has determined that amputation is the only option to save her life and prevent further suffering.

Fuego is scheduled for surgery tomorrow.

This tiny girl has already been through so much in her short life, and while losing a leg is heartbreaking, we know it will give her the chance to live a happy, pain-free life. Cats are incredibly resilient, and we have no doubt that Fuego will learn to thrive as a tripod.

Please keep Fuego in your thoughts and prayers tonight and tomorrow as she undergoes surgery. She needs all the love, positive thoughts, and healing wishes she can get. ❤️🐾

THE EASTERN COTTONTAIL

One Of Pennsylvania’s Most Misunderstood Animals

Few wild animals are “rescued” by well-meaning people more often than baby rabbits.

Why?

Because people care.

Unfortunately, many healthy baby rabbits are accidentally taken from the wild when they were never orphaned to begin with.

❌ MYTH: If a baby rabbit is alone, its mother abandoned it.

✅ FACT: Mother rabbits spend very little time at the nest.

To avoid attracting predators, mom typically visits only a few times a day—often at dawn and dusk—to feed her babies.

The rest of the day, she stays away on purpose.

A nest full of babies by themselves is usually completely normal.

❌ MYTH: Rabbits are rodents.

✅ FACT: Rabbits are not rodents.

Rabbits belong to a separate group of mammals called lagomorphs.

One major difference?

Rabbits have four upper incisors, while rodents only have two.

❌ MYTH: Rabbits are helpless and defenseless.

✅ FACT: Rabbits rely on speed and awareness to survive.

🏃 They can run up to 35 mph.

👂 Their ears can rotate to detect danger.

👀 Their eyes provide nearly 360-degree vision.

They’re built to spot predators long before predators spot them.

❌ MYTH: Rabbits are just cute little lawn ornaments.

✅ FACT: Rabbits play an important role in Pennsylvania’s ecosystem.

They provide food for:

🦅 Hawks
🦉 Owls
🦊 Foxes

🐺 Coyotes
🐈 Bobcats

Healthy rabbit populations help support healthy predator populations.

🤯 DID YOU KNOW?

✅ Baby rabbits are called kits or kittens.

✅ Rabbits can have multiple litters every year.

✅ A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing.

✅ Their powerful back legs can launch them several feet in a single leap.

✅ Rabbits communicate through body language, foot thumps, and ear positioning.

⚠️ BEFORE YOU “RESCUE” A BABY RABBIT

Ask yourself:

🐇 Is it injured?

🐇 Is it bleeding?

🐇 Has the mother been confirmed dead?

🐇 Is the nest destroyed?

If the answer is no, the best thing you can usually do is leave the baby where it is and monitor from a distance.

Mom is probably nearby.

❤️ THE BOTTOM LINE

The greatest gift we can give most baby rabbits isn’t rescue.

It’s leaving them with their mother.

Eastern cottontails have survived in Pennsylvania for thousands of years because mom knows exactly what she’s doing.

The next time you find a tiny bunny tucked into the grass, remember:

Being alone doesn’t mean it’s abandoned.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is simply let wildlife be wild.
