We are a no-kill 501(c)(3) animal rescue in Sierra County NM specializing in compassion, care plans & adoption for our rescues plus spay/neuter aid for our community. THE SIERRA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY raises funds for several comprehensive programs that provide long-term benefits for the companion animals of Sierra County.

1) THE SIERRA COUNTY SPAY-NEUTER PROGRAM is one of the most effective in cu

rbing the tragic dogs and cats overpopulation in our county. If you need help to have your dog or cat (your pet) sterilized, you will receive a rebate certificate for a discounted procedure. Call 575-894-1694 to obtain an application— leave a message stating your phone number clearly, and twice.

2) THE SPAY-A-STRAY PROGRAM covers the entire costs of sterilizing five or more stray or feral cats each month, using the "Trap-Neuter-Return" method pioneered by Alley Cat Allies. Cats sterilized under this program must have a safe environment to return to after sterilization. Call 575-894-1694 to obtain an application— leave a message stating your phone number clearly, and twice.

3. ADOPTION PROGRAM. Dogs and cats in rescue and residing at Desert Haven are available for adoption. If you’re considering adopting a dog or cat, reach out to our adoption coordinator via phone at 612-387-0215 or email at [email protected]. Our adoptable companion animals can be viewed at DesertHaven.Petfinder.com. Thank you for considering adoption!

It’s an age old tale. Old as time itself.

🌟Volunteer do-gooder fills in for vacationing volunteer do-gooders to help us walk our dogs🌟

Meet Susan. One morning she wasn’t planning to walk our dogs but reached out and said, “I happen to be free do you need help?”

We don’t turn down those offers 💜

Susan is familiar with dog walking but on this day something isn’t quite right. Or is it?! What’s happening is that she feels an instant magnetic attraction to one of our puppies.

Snoopy🦋

“What is going on!”, she thinks. “I’m a dog-mom to two seniors for crying out loud. Could I adopt a puppy?”

Hard as she tries, she can’t stop thinking about Snoopy. She reaches out to inquire.

Caveat: We promise dog walking is a no-obligation volunteer activity. But sometimes sparks do fly! ✨

Around Snoopy, Susan’s adorable and wonderful seniors Joey and Fiona are all, “um excuse me mom but why do I feel like doing play bows after all these years?!”

And the rest is history!

Snoopy now Pinto is adopted! 💞

Who's coming to meet Ozzy today? He's a fun-loving puppy who adores dogs and being playful. Ozzy is around 45 pounds and growing! At an impressionable 7 months old, we expect he'll hit 55 perhaps 60 pounds before he's done growing. He is such a fun playmate for dogs and will thrive in a home with another dog(s) so he can romp with and learn from doggie friends. He's never met a dog he didn't love, any size, any age. He's a good listener to his dog companions, buggin off when asked, playing when invited. He's fabulous! Have a dog that would do well to have Ozzy in his life? Let's do an intro

There’s no one that loves a good costume more than our dear Twix and no one that loves putting our babies in costume more than our volunteer Sam!

Together the pair of them came up with a debonair look for our handsome Twix and we added just a touch (we won’t make a habit of it pinky swear) of Gemini AI - just to see what Twix would look like as a daddy on Father’s Day.

All aboard the Twix Train! Twix loves puppies lots so his look of happiness isn’t far off from how he actually feels around puppies 🐶🐾

Our big red sweet son wants to wish everyone who cares about others a happy day🦋🩵

Rescue is historically female driven. Women tend to lead the charge and do the work. However, at Desert Haven we have as many men taking part in the day to day care of our animals as women. Some are fathers to human children, all are father figures to our Desert Haven fur children. We salute you John, Mark P, Josh, Matt, Mark C, Raoul, Dave and all men that touch the lives of our dogs and cats in a positive and loving way. And we wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and father figures out there! Whether it be for humans or animals, being kind and caring men is important and we hold these type of men up in love and light! Lead the way, fine sirs ❤️🩵🧡🐾

There is something extra special about heading into the weekend with an adoption story. Petite, darling Wowie Zowie was braving life out on the streets of TorC when a loving lady scooped her up and chose to help. Wowie was treated to the absolute best of a loving home and got all her important veterinary care before joining the Cool Cat Neighborhood at Desert Haven. She wooed all the resident Cutie Pie boys including the elusive orange tiger, Freddy. Wowie Zowie wasn't here long before a man walked in who she couldnt resist. He had recently lost his senior rescue kitty, which many of us know can create a big hole in our hearts. She bee-lined straight to him, and she could sense he was the someone who needed all this amazing love she has to give and would return it ten-fold. Just like that - a love connection was made on a breezy warm summer day in the Cool Cat Neighborhood. Wowie. Zowie. Chose her person. Our darling girl is adopted! 😍🐾💞
