Someone who has given all of us a gift at the Shelter is now offering the opportunity to give all of you the gift as well. Adam Claar, of Thoughtful Dogs, is now offering group classes at Animal Aid. You can click on the link at the end to see all the details - and it is totally worth your click.
But let me tell you why it's worth the click. Adam came to help at the Shelter five years ago - there was one volunteer who relentlessly pursued him to come help one dog that was very special to her, one dog that was crumbling under the stress of shelter life, but that no one, especially this one volunteer, wanted him to continue suffering.
Adam trained a small group of volunteers to safely work with this dog, to offer enrichment to him and to make his days a bit brighter. The members of the group were varied - from young to old and from a little experience to none. And they most definitely made this dog's life brighter.
Adam then said, well, he could stay another month or two and maybe offer a different type of help. Maybe he could teach a small group of volunteers about the magic of playgroups.
And that changed everything. Every eligible dog was dog-tested to see who they could play with - dogs with no friends now had friends. Shy dogs came out of their shells. Active dogs suddenly had an outlet for their energy. And dogs who just wanted company, had company.
It's even harder to describe the joy it brought to the volunteers involved with playgroups. To see dogs who once had very routine days suddenly have days that made them run with joy, it was everything.
And now he is offering his unique style of training to everyone - and in the best place of all, our Shelter. Your dog will have a blast. And you will come away with a new appreciation for how simple things can change your dog's life.
We are grateful for Adam and all he has done for our dogs - he has seen over 500 dogs come and go at our Shelter and he has made a difference in a majority of their lives.
