Vet appointment today for Lani & Sugar 🐎

This check up has been overdue.

Lani keeps giving me a run for my money. If it's not one leg injured, it's another. She's been mildly unsound on her left hind since summer. No hoof issues - big compliments to her barefoot trimmer on everyone's hooves 🫶🏼 but vet does believe arthritis is setting in the ankle. Starting her on some pain meds and will assess from there.

Sugar is just keeping her namesake 🫠 needing blood work done to have her insulin levels tested. I suspect Cushing's Disease with her past bouts of laminitis issues.

Other than Lani being a bit overweight (probably because she's not moving as much since being in pain), the vet complimented their management, particularly Sugar's - "Well managed equine metabolic patient." I do believe the track system has been essential over the last year for her!

I'll take all the wins I can get 👏🏼

Not a fun vet bill, but relieved to confirm my assumptions and get them on the meds to help them stay sound and happier.

I saw something this week that said,

"Don't forget to enjoy the horse you work so hard to have."

And I needed that.

I don't need riding to enjoy my horses.

But I get to

right now, with Blue.

It's a privilege that she agrees and says yes to riding,

that she has no objections to tacking up,

and lines up to the mounting block willingly.

We're really only getting started

and we've come so far.

And if I could never ride her again starting tomorrow,

I will still enjoy her for exactly who she is.

But I ride

because I get to

right now, with Blue.

So,

I will

while I can.

I'll leave the dishes dirty.

I'll leave the work list on the laptop just a little while longer.

I'll give my anxiety to God,

and I'll enjoy

this horse I've worked so hard to have and to enjoy life with.

This horse I love so much,

who knows she can tell me, "No, thanks, Mom"

and still get reinforced

But so often chooses "yes" to riding anyway

Because she is reinforced for this too, yes.

But I can feel it.

She also knows

that I love her, too.

and she knows this because

I will listen to her needs.

We go into this deeeeeeep during Phase 5 of the Positive Reinforcement Instructor Mentorship.

I live in the camp of...riding can be done well, ethically, and compassionately for the horse.

I also advocate that horses are way more than riding

and it's time we take that mindset seriously when we're passing on equine education to the next gen.
