WE’RE OFFICIALLY OPEN TOMORROW!!!!

After a very long road, Steamtown Veterinary Center will officially open our doors tomorrow!!!

Beginning tomorrow, 08/22/2026, we’ll be here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For anyone who is new to our page, Steamtown Veterinary Center is a privately owned veterinary hospital created to provide Northeastern Pennsylvania with emergency veterinary care when your pet is sick, injured, or needs immediate care.

We are not here to replace your regular veterinarian. We’re here to work alongside the amazing general practices in our community by providing emergency and urgent care, hospitalization, surgery, diagnostics, and continued care when your regular veterinarian may not be available.

Our hospital is equipped for:
• Emergency and urgent veterinary care
• 24 hour hospitalization and monitoring
• Emergency and urgent surgery
• Soft tissue surgery
• Dentistry, dental radiographs, and oral surgery
• Digital X-rays
• Ultrasound
• In house laboratory testing
• Oxygen support and critical care
• And more

For now, we will primarily be seeing dogs and cats. We may have veterinarians working who have a special interest or experience in exotic animal medicine. When those doctors are scheduled, we’ll let everyone know that exotic appointments or emergencies may be available during those specific shifts.

At this time, we do not have any exotic focused shifts scheduled, so for now, please consider us a dogs and cats only hospital unless we announce otherwise.

Starting tomorrow, if your pet needs us, we’re here, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Thank you to everyone who has followed along, shared our posts, called us, stopped by, encouraged us, and supported us throughout this entire process. The support from this community has meant so much to us.

We cannot wait to finally open our doors and start caring for the pets and families of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

We’re here if you need us!!!

A new veterinary emergency/urgent care clinic will be opening soon in the area! Add their number to your contacts just in case!

Our phones are officially up and running!

While Steamtown Veterinary Center isn’t open just yet, we’ll be in the office until 7 PM tonight and would love to start getting you and your pets into our system.

Give us a call and we can get your basic information set up ahead of time. That way, once we’re open, if you ever need us for an emergency or urgent visit, you’re already in our system and there’s one less thing to worry about.

Just a reminder!
Steamtown Veterinary Center is not a general practice, and we are not here to replace your primary care veterinarian. We are an emergency and urgent care hospital here to work alongside the great veterinary practices in our community when your pet needs more immediate care.

In addition to emergency and urgent care, we will also be performing surgeries.

We’re getting close and can’t wait to open our doors and start serving the community!

Think your dog knows what “sit” means? Here’s a challenge to see how well they know it.

What level is your dog at?

Does your dog really understand “Sit”—or do they only understand it when you’re standing in front of them in the kitchen?

Try the Sit Test Challenge and see how far your dog gets.

Start with an easy food lure, then gradually remove the help and change the situation: hand signal only, verbal cue only, outdoors, from the couch, with your hands full, from another room, around distractions—and eventually at a distance when something exciting is happening.

A struggle at a harder level doesn’t mean your dog is stubborn. It simply shows you what you still need to practice. Go back a step, make it easier, and reward generously.

Try it with your dog and tell us:

Which levels can they do—and where do they get confused?

And what challenge would you add to the test?

The Fourth of July is almost here — and while we love the celebration, our dogs? Not so much.

Fireworks are one of the leading causes of lost dogs every year, and even pups who seem "totally fine" can be stressed by the noise and vibration. I’ve written about this more than once, and the advice is as important as ever:

✅ Don't bring your dog to fireworks displays, no matter how calm they usually are.
✅ Make sure their ID tags are on and secure.
✅ Set up a quiet, cozy space away from windows and exterior walls if home; or consider this a good time to go to that cabin in the woods?
✅ Learn to use counter conditioning to prevent a fearful response—loud noise = treat!
✅ Consider tools like Thundershirts, or — for dogs with serious noise phobias — talk to your vet about medication options ahead of time.

The time to plan is NOW, before the booms begin.

How do you handle the Fourth? Share your tips (and coping strategies!) in the comments.
