Allow Your Puppy to Bee a Puppy
A Gentle, Efficient Potty-Training Method----
Potty training does not have to be a battle between you and your puppy. With routine, patience, supervision, and a little understanding of how puppies naturally behave, it can be a surprisingly smooth process.
While your puppy was here with us, potty training began at approximately three weeks of age. Dogs naturally prefer not to sleep, eat, or walk in their own waste, so we begin by giving them clearly separated areas for sleeping, eating, drinking, playing, and pottying.
How We Begin---
We arrange a portable playpen in a rectangular shape with a small tarp underneath to protect the floor from accidents. It is a good idea to have a second tarp available so the soiled one can be replaced and cleaned as soon as possible.
Our setup includes:
---A comfortable, partially covered crate at one end
---A water bowl near the middle
---Grass potty pads at the opposite end
---We have learned to clamp the artificial grass securely to the potty-pad tray. Otherwise, curious little puppies may pull it loose and carry it around. Lols 😂 Exploring, tugging, and rearranging things are all perfectly normal parts of being a puppy!
This arrangement helps puppies begin understanding that their sleeping area and their potty area are two different places.
Why an Enzyme Cleaner Is Important---
Dogs are creatures of habit. Once they begin pottying in a particular place, the remaining scent communicates, “This is my bathroom.”
You may clean an accident with an ordinary household cleaner, and the area may look and smell perfectly clean to you. However, unless the organic matter and odor have been broken down with an enzymatic cleaner, your puppy may still be able to smell it. That lingering scent can encourage the puppy to return to the same spot.

This is simply the product we have chosen to use. It is certainly not the only good option, so we encourage puppy families to compare products and select one that works well for their household and surfaces.
Whenever one of our puppies has an accident, we clean it as soon as we notice it and use the enzymatic cleaner according to the label directions.
Help Your Puppy Find the Bathroom---
Routine is one of the most important parts of successful potty training.
Feed your puppy at approximately the same times each day, following the feeding schedule recommended for your puppy’s age. After the puppy finishes eating, wait about five minutes and then take him or her outside.
Puppies should also be taken to their potty area:
---Immediately after waking
---Shortly after drinking
---After active play
---Before going into the crate
---As soon as they come out of the crate
---Before bedtime
---Frequently throughout the day
Some families become frustrated because their puppy will spend time outside and then come back into the house and immediately potty. At that point, the puppy may simply not understand where the proper bathroom is located.
Remember, dogs are creatures of habit and often prefer a familiar, scent-marked potty area.
Our Method for Establishing a Potty Spot---
To help your puppy identify the proper bathroom area, pick up a small amount of the puppy’s stool and place it in the part of your yard where you want the puppy to potty.
For urine accidents, you can absorb a little urine with a paper towel and temporarily place it in the designated potty area.
Take your puppy directly to that same location after meals and during scheduled potty trips. The familiar scent helps communicate:
“This is where I go potty.”
It may take several repeated trips before the puppy makes the connection. Be consistent and give the puppy enough quiet time to sniff and concentrate.
Once your puppy is consistently using the designated area, dispose of the paper towels and continue cleaning up waste regularly. You may choose to leave one recent stool briefly while the puppy is still learning, but the potty area should otherwise be kept clean and sanitary.
Until your veterinarian confirms that your puppy is adequately protected by vaccinations, use a clean, private potty area and avoid places frequently visited by unfamiliar dogs.
What Not to Do---
Regardless of how frustrating an accident may be, please do not punish your puppy.
Do not hit, yell, rub the puppy’s nose in the accident, or drag the puppy over to it. A puppy may not connect that punishment with the earlier accident. Instead, the puppy may learn that pottying in front of you is frightening.
This can cause some puppies to begin sneaking away or hiding when they need to relieve themselves, making potty training much more difficult.
f you catch your puppy beginning to potty indoors, calmly interrupt and immediately carry or guide the puppy to the proper potty area. If you discover an accident later, simply clean it thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner and adjust the puppy’s schedule or supervision.
An accident is not spite, stubbornness, or a lack of intelligence. It simply means the puppy is still learning—or that we missed the puppy’s signal.
Belly Bands for Boy Puppies
Disposable and washable belly bands can be helpful for male puppies while they are playing inside your home or traveling in the car. However, a belly band is a temporary management tool—not a replacement for potty training.
Check it frequently and change it immediately when wet. Never leave a wet belly band on a puppy, and do not leave one on overnight or for long periods while you are away. The skin needs to remain clean and dry.
Praise Is a Wonderful Reward
We do not normally give a treat every time a puppy potties. We pour on the praise instead!
A happy voice, loving attention, and a few belly rubs show the puppy that we are very pleased. Your approval means more to your puppy than you may realize.
If your family prefers using a small training treat in the beginning, that is also a personal choice. The most important thing is to reward the puppy immediately after pottying in the correct place—not after returning to the house.
Teaching Your Puppy to Ask
Some of our puppy families hang bells near the door. Their dogs learn to touch or rattle the bells when they need to go outside.
That is very, very smart!
Other puppies may sit by the door, stare at their person, pace, sniff the floor, circle, whine, or suddenly wander away from play. Learn your puppy’s individual signals and respond quickly.
Allow Your Puppy to Bee a Puppy
Your puppy will have accidents. Puppies become distracted, excited, busy, and sometimes forget what they are supposed to be doing. That is not misbehavior—it is puppyhood.
Be patient. Stay consistent. Keep the potty area familiar, clean indoor accidents thoroughly, and praise every success.
Before long, your puppy will understand exactly what you are asking.
