HOTCHNER CHOSE VIOLENCE TODAY.

Meet Hotchner, our 9-year-old Bull Terrier who apparently woke up this morning and decided he was going to get his ENTIRE LIFE TOGETHER in one appointment.

This man came in today for:
💉 ALL his vaccines because we believe in being protected AND fabulous.
🩸 Senior lab work because apparently 9 years old means we have to start being responsible.
✂️ A neuter because somebody had to take away his last little bit of audacity.
🩺 A scrotal ablation because we are NOT leaving souvenirs.
🦷 And ALMOST A FULL MOUTH EXTRACTION because, SURPRISE, those teeth were not invited to the next chapter of his life.

Basically, Hotchner came in for a wellness visit and left with a full factory reset.

But let’s be real… this sweet senior boy deserves ALL the pampering, comfort, and love in the world. ❤️ After spending his life outdoors, he’s finally getting the chance to experience what it means to be a spoiled indoor dog. And if today’s adventure is any indication, he’s about to have a LOT of opinions about his new lifestyle. 😂

Welcome to the good life, Hotchner! The only thing getting spoiled around here now is YOU.

Side note- Although he has been through hell, he has been a TOTAL gentleman for everything. Truly the best.

We have BULL TERRIERS! These kiddos (senior citizens) are looking for fosters or a good home. Meet Hotchner, Bucky, and Chocolate Kiss! 🥹🐶 Three distinguished older gentlemen and lady because apparently retirement plans look different for everyone who are ready for their BIGGEST adventure yet… INDOOR LIFE! 🛋️🦴

These three sweet souls have spent their ENTIRE LIVES living outside. They’ve never really had the chance to experience what it means to be a spoiled house dog, sleep on a comfy couch, curl up in a warm bed, or demand snacks from their humans every 37 minutes. 😜

But guess what?! These babies have WONDERFUL personalities! ❤️
They’ve all had baths and nail trims, and every single one of them acted AMAZING! Seriously, they were absolute rockstars!

Now, we want to find them something they may have never truly known before: a home, a soft place to sleep, a family to love, and a chance to just be DOGS. 🏡💕

Because they’ve lived outdoors their entire lives, they will need patient, understanding homes willing to give them time to adjust to indoor living. Things that seem completely normal to our spoiled pets may be brand-new experiences for them. They deserve people who will celebrate the little victories, offer reassurance, and let them learn at their own pace.

We are SO excited for these babies to discover the joys of indoor living! Just imagine their first cozy bed, their first lazy day on the couch, and the realization that they never have to sleep outside again.

Can you foster or adopt Hotchner, Bucky, or Chocolate Kiss? You don’t have to be perfect, and you don’t have to have a mansion full of dog beds. You just need a kind heart, patience, and a willingness to show a senior dog that life can be pretty darn wonderful.

One of the most discouraging parts of working in veterinary medicine is dealing with people who are not honest with us. Yesterday, we had someone bring in a very sick puppy. We discussed the seriousness of the situation, and the owner agreed to diagnostics and care. Unfortunately, when it came time to check out, he did not have the money to pay for the services that had been provided. He assured us that he would pay the bill later. Unfortunately, we have now been left hanging. What makes this especially frustrating is that there are so many clients who genuinely need help and whom we would love to be able to work with. We understand that veterinary care can be expensive, and we are often willing to work with people when they are honest and upfront about their financial situation. If someone tells us, “I really want to help my pet, but I simply cannot afford the entire bill,” that gives us the opportunity to have an honest conversation about options. Sometimes we may be able to adjust the treatment plan, donate certain services or products, or work out a reasonable payment arrangement. What makes that difficult is when someone tells us they can pay, agrees to services, and then simply does not follow through. Every time this happens, it makes it harder for us to trust the next person who genuinely needs help. It pushes us toward requiring payment upfront and being much more cautious about offering payment arrangements—even to people who are truly struggling and desperately need veterinary care.

We are not asking everyone to have unlimited financial resources. We are asking for honesty. If you cannot afford something, please tell us. We would much rather have an honest conversation and see what we can do than be lied to and left with an unpaid bill. Veterinary medicine is already emotionally and financially challenging, and situations like this make it harder for us to extend trust and generosity to the people who genuinely need it. Please understand that when you choose not to be honest with us, there are consequences that extend beyond your individual account. You make it harder for us to help the next person who truly needs a little grace.

If anyone knows Edwin Looney or Kayla Parker, please let them know we have been trying to collect payment from them.

🔥 WE’RE BLOWING OFF EARLY! 🔥😂

East Douglas Veterinary Clinic will be closing early tomorrow around 4:30 PM because our team is taking our stuff out of the clinic and heading off to ENJOY SOME GLASS BLOWING! 🫶🏼

We work hard, love your pets hard, and occasionally need to get out of the clinic and make something that isn’t covered in fur, slobber, or bodily fluids.

So if you need us tomorrow, please plan accordingly and get those calls, medications, and pet needs taken care of before 4:30 PM!

We’ll be back to our regularly scheduled chaos after our little artistic adventure.

🚨 BULL TERRIER RESCUE — FOSTERS & ADOPTERS NEEDED! 🚨

I’m about to take on a situation that is very close to my heart, and I’m going to need HELP. ❤️

I will be “rescuing” FIVE Bull Terriers who have spent their entire lives as outdoor dogs. They are between 9–11 years old, and at this stage in their lives, they deserve something different — a warm, comfortable place to call home, soft beds, good food, companionship, and most importantly, to finally know what it feels like to be someone’s family.

These dogs have lived very different lives than many of us would consider ideal, so I want to be very honest: they will need patience and understanding. They may need time to adjust to being inside, learning household routines, walking on a leash, receiving individual attention, and simply figuring out what it means to be a house dog.

❤️ I am looking for both FOSTERS and ADOPTERS. ❤️

If you have experience with Bull Terriers, senior dogs, or dogs transitioning from outdoor living, that is a huge plus. But more than anything, I’m looking for people who are willing to give these dogs the time, patience, and love they deserve.

Before placement, they will receive:
🐾 Complete veterinary examinations
💉 Vaccinations
✂️ Spay/neuter
🩸 Recent bloodwork to screen for underlying disease
❤️ Individual assessment so we can learn as much as possible about each dog’s needs and personality

Because they are older, I want to make sure we are setting them up for success and placing them in homes that are truly appropriate for them.

Five dogs means five lives that need someone to step up. I cannot do this alone, and I don’t want to have to turn away the opportunity to give them a better life simply because I don’t have enough homes available.

If you have ever wanted to rescue a Bull Terrier, this may be your chance to make an enormous difference in the life of a senior dog.

Last Saturday, I met a dog named Frankie at VESH.

And honestly… I was scared for him.

Frankie was critically ill. He was incredibly sick, and his condition was so concerning that we had the conversation no veterinarian ever wants to have with a family — the conversation about euthanasia.

I went home that night thinking about him.

I made a post about Frankie last week because I was genuinely worried about whether he was going to make it. There were so many unknowns. So many reasons to be realistic about what could happen.

But there was something about Frankie that I couldn’t shake.

Sometimes, medicine gives you statistics. Sometimes it gives you probabilities and prognoses. And sometimes, despite everything you know, there is just a little voice inside you saying, “Not yet.”

So I asked his owner to trust me.

I asked them to let me keep treating him. To give him more time. To give him one more chance.

And they did.

They trusted me when I couldn’t guarantee them a happy ending. They trusted my gut when I couldn’t promise them that Frankie would walk again. They trusted me enough to say, “Okay. Let’s keep fighting.”

And Frankie?

Frankie fought.

He made his way home on Monday.

And he has continued to fight every single day since.

His owners have poured their hearts into him. The amount of work, dedication, patience, nursing care, and love they have given this dog is absolutely incredible. Recovery like this doesn’t happen without someone willing to get up over and over again, clean up the messes, help when things are difficult, celebrate the tiny victories, and keep going when progress feels painfully slow.

When I first saw Frankie, he was essentially paralyzed in his back end.

Today…

Frankie can WALK

If you know Bull Terriers, you know they have two incredible talents: stealing your heart… and eating absolutely anything they shouldn’t. 🤦🏼‍♀️❤️

Four days after major abdominal surgery, Turbeaux has decided he’s completely over all of this. He was eating dog food within 6 hours of surgery, and honestly, if you met him today, you would have absolutely no clue he just had his abdomen opened up. Bull Terriers truly have steel stomachs… although we’d really prefer they stop putting that theory to the test!

So… what was hiding in there?

Well, one of the “treasures” we found was the outside of a floss container. Yep… the same one he ate back in September. 🤯 I’ll post a side-by-side picture of what it looked like brand new versus what almost a year marinating in a Bull Terrier stomach did to it. It’s honestly incredible (and a little disgusting).

His collection also included:
💙 A large plastic heart-shaped item
🧩 Multiple pieces of hard plastic
🤦🏼‍♀️ A few other miscellaneous items that clearly did not belong in a stomach

Apparently Turbeaux was secretly building his own little landfill.

Watching your own pet go through major surgery is a completely different experience, even when you’re the veterinarian. It’s stressful, emotional, and humbling. I can’t thank my incredible team enough for taking such amazing care of my boy. Knowing he was surrounded by people who love him as much as I do meant everything.

Most importantly, we’re so incredibly grateful he’s doing so well.

And, because he is a Bull Terrier, he has already returned to his regularly scheduled programming: being stubborn, ignoring every recommendation for “activity restriction,” and doing exactly whatever he wants. If determination burned calories, he’d never need another meal.

Here’s to hoping the only thing he swallows from now on is his dog food

If you’ve been around our clinic for any length of time, you know we’re usually the ones helping your pets through emergencies. This week… it was my own.

Turbeaux decided he wanted to keep life interesting and ended up needing emergency surgery for a gastrointestinal foreign body. For those who aren’t familiar, a foreign body is when a pet swallows something they shouldn’t (toys, socks, rocks, corn cobs… the list goes on), and it becomes lodged in the stomach or intestines. Once blocked, food and water can’t pass normally, the intestines can lose their blood supply, and without surgery, it can quickly become life-threatening.

Ironically, this is my second Bull Terrier to have this “fun” surgery. Apparently I have a type… and unfortunately, so do they.

I truly don’t have enough words to thank my incredible team. Every single person stepped up to make sure Turbeaux received the very best care while also helping keep the clinic running. They cared for him just as they would any of our patients, and knowing he was surrounded by people who love him as much as I do meant more than I can express. Thank you for carrying me through a day that was, to put it lightly, complete chaos.

If I seemed a little off my game, distracted, or not quite myself, I promise there was a reason. It’s a little difficult to focus when your own dog is the one on the surgery table.

Now we’re home, and recovery has officially begun. I’ve cleaned up what feels like a tremendous amount of diarrhea, our house currently smells like it belongs to a barn animal instead of a family and Turbeaux is blissfully unaware of the emotional roller coaster he put us through. Typical Bull Terrier behavior.

This whole experience has been a humbling reminder that no amount of veterinary knowledge makes you immune to the worry, fear, and helplessness of having your own pet sick. We understand what our clients go through because we’ve been there too. Sometimes the doctor becomes the client, and it gives you an entirely different perspective.

Here’s hoping Turbeaux has officially used up his lifetime quota of foreign body surgeries… because twice is more than enough! ❤️
