Sometimes learning takes time.

When you’ve practiced doing something one way for multiple years, it takes time, patience, and consistency to learn a new way.

It can be difficult and even frustrating at times.

If you persevere though it will be worth it in the long run. Your dog will be able to go out in the world and trust in your guidance. You may not be able to convince them that the world is great and not scary, but you will be able to give them tools to navigate it better.

Barry and Willis went through a 10 day training program to unlearn some habits and start establishing a new foundation and understanding of the world. That first day was very scary for Willis but we took it slow and he started to trust me more and more! By the end, if he was unsure about something he would immediately look to me to see what he should do or he would walk next to me where he felt confident and safe.

I am so proud of these two and their owners!!

Puppy baths don’t go as expected.

That’s just the reality of bathing your puppy😂🐶

There is good news though, this is actually okay.

Because if you take the time to form “good experiences” with bathtime early on, they will enjoy bathtime for the rest of their lives.

So take your time.

Be intentional.

Remember that sometimes you don’t actually complete a full bath (and that is okay!)

Listen to your puppy— if they are fighting you, they may not be ready for the next step.

Go back to the last step (or just be done for the day) and see how they do.

Their fighting against you is communication.

They are trying to tell you that they aren’t ready, that they’re scared, etc.

Listen to them! And take it at their pace. This builds trust with your pup and longterm it will create a more pleasant bath for everyone.

Puppyhood is foundational.

It is the key to a lifelong bond and most harmonious life together.

When you bring a puppy into your life, you must choose wisely.

Choose the breeder (or rescue) wisely.

Choose the breed wisely.

Choose what you do with your new puppy wisely.

Choose what you expose them to and what you teach them wisely.

And I say this, not to invoke fear– but to inspire!

YOU get to choose.

That is a wonderful thing.

YOU get to form your puppy’s outlook on life, how they experience the world, how they live with you.

This is fantastic news!

But it also means that if you want to have this sort of companion, you must take the time to research, to plan, to follow through.
