River hound is a naturally nervous doggo who doesn’t like things things that go over her head.

Here you can see me doing some clicker training for a nose-in behavior that allowed her to initially have control of whether or not something went over her head.

We all like to have choices especially when doing something that doesn’t come easily.

We can grant our dogs the ability to choose as well. After all, as Dr. Susan Friedman says, “choice is a primary reinforcer.”

We all feel better about what we are doing when we have choices.

How does your dog get to choose things throughout their day with you?

Ready to tire out your dog while you sit comfortably in a chair and watch them do all the work?

Ditch the food bowl, and have a Garden Party.

What you’ll need:
✅ your dog’s kibble (if your dog is not crazy about their kibble use their favorite treats or even high value food)
✅ a food-motivated dog
✅ a long-line or a few standard leashes hooked together to create a long line (only needed if you do not have a fenced in yard)
✅ grass (or if you are like me, some weeds masquerading as grass)
✅ comfy seating for the human
✅ beverage of choice for the human
✅ your phone to capture your dog having fun doing what they are biologically wired to do!

The Steps
1. If your dog is very food motivated, and you know that they would already move mountains for food, just chuck the kibble into the air and let it fall wherever while your dog watches.
2. If your dog needs more encouragement, hang out next to them and put out handfuls of kibble in small spaces to get them “searching.” Actively encourage them!
3. Sit back and relax and enjoy watching biology working for you instead of against you.
4. Share pictures📸

Not only are we tiring out our dogs because sniffing is mental stimulation, we are also teaching them a way to occupy themselves with an activity we prefer. Sniffing is much better than barking, digging, or making escape attempts at least according to the humans I meet.

At the end of a day of training dogs, I don’t always have the bandwidth to train my own.

Bandwidth is something I talk about all the time with my clients.

It matters more than we think, and lots of things lobby for it.

Maybe I would have the bandwidth to train if the dishes weren’t piling up and the yard magically stopped growing…

But until I discover magic, on low-bandwidth days, I combine training with something else I already need to be doing.

Tonight, it was a down-stay for dishwasher loading.

This is a great way to keep your dog out of the dishwasher while you are loading or unloading dishes.

Here, Lanna is staying on her mat, I have her kibble in a container within reach, and she is strategically positioned just behind me, making it easy to feed her and return to what I’m doing.

We could talk about what this training is preventing, but I prefer to talk about what training provides:
✅Connection on a day I didn’t have the energy for in-depth training
✅ A fun, engaged way for Lanna to get her dinner
✅ Mental enrichment (which means Lanna is curled up next to me as I type this)
✅ Real-World Practice because training doesn’t work in the real world if we don’t train in the real-world
✅Review of a behavior she already knows (because review is always good)
✅ A contended hound and a guilt-free human who got to make the evening fun for their dog
✅A loaded dishwasher
