**WARNING: LONG IMPORTANT POST AHEAD**
There have been a lot of media reports about panleukopenia at the shelter in Wichita. To be clear, IT IS NOT THE Feline Leukemia Virus. •Panleukopenia is an intestinal virus that can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, dehydration, and severe diarrhea.
•It is one of the viruses that is included in our core vaccines. So, if your cat has been vaccinated for “distemper”, “RCP”, or “FVRCP”, these are all the same thing and have the vaccine for panleukopenia in it.
•Panleukopenia spreads mainly through direct contact with an infected cat or contact with contaminated body fluids, f***s, and environments.
•What that means for your cats at the Cat Hospital: Any cat suspected of having a contagious disease is isolated in a separate room and no cats come into contact with each other. We have one designated person that cares for the isolated cats. All surfaces in our clinic are thoroughly disinfected with a cleaner that kills the virus.
•If you suspect your cat has come in contact with an infected cat or if your cat is displaying symptoms of panleukopenia, please contact us immediately.

We understand that visiting the vet can be a stressful experience for both cats and caregivers. Our top tips will help reduce some of that stress and anxiety 👇

🐱 Choose a sturdy and secure carrier, place a blanket from home inside for a familiar scent.

🐱 Leave the carrier out at home as an extra bed or safe space, so your cat doesn’t always associate it with leaving.

🐱 Spray the carrier with synthetic feline pheromones at least 15 minutes before putting your cat in it.

🐱 Cover the carrier with a cloth or towel while you are travelling to help keep your cat calm. Rather than holding the carrier by the handle, which can cause it to swing, carry it with both hands from underneath.
