When Puppies or Kittens Won’t Arrive: Know the Signs of Dystocia

Dystocia -- difficult or obstructed labor -- can quickly become an emergency for a pregnant dog or cat and her babies. Knowing the warning signs can make all the difference.

Signs to watch for:
- Strong contractions for 20–30 minutes with no puppy or kitten produced
- Weak or intermittent contractions for several hours without progressing
- More than 2 hours between babies when more are expected
- A puppy or kitten visibly stuck in the birth canal
- Green or dark discharge before the first baby is born
- Excessive bleeding, severe pain, weakness, collapse, or extreme distress
- Pregnancy lasting significantly beyond the expected due date

How is dystocia treated?
Treatment depends on the cause and the condition of mom and her babies. Your veterinarian may use medications to help stimulate contractions when appropriate and safe, provide fluids and supportive care, or recommend an emergency C-section if there is an obstruction, fetal distress, ineffective contractions, or another serious complication.

Don’t wait and see if labor will “work itself out.” Dystocia can become life-threatening, and prompt veterinary evaluation may save the lives of both the mother and her babies.

Allergic Reactions in Pets: Know the Signs!

Allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions can happen suddenly and may range from mild to life-threatening. We commonly see allergic reactions occur after vaccinations, insect or bee stings, medication administration, or exposure to something new in the environment.

Common signs include:

- Facial or muzzle swelling
- Hives or raised bumps on the skin
- Intense itching or redness
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Difficulty breathing
- Weakness, collapse, or extreme lethargy

If your pet develops sudden swelling, breathing difficulties, repeated vomiting, collapse, or other concerning symptoms after a potential allergen exposure, don’t wait to see if it gets better. Seek urgent veterinary care immediately.

At UPC, our team is here when your pet needs prompt attention. If you’re concerned about an allergic reaction, call us or come in for evaluation.

When in doubt, it’s always better to have your pet checked. Located right off of K-96 and Greenwich, Urgent Pet Care is here for you and your pet.
