🎆 **Fireworks and Frightened Pets: Know What to Do** 🐾

Even with the best intentions, accidents happen. Fireworks can scare even the most well-behaved pets, and every year we see an increase in lost animals over the Fourth of July holiday.

# # # 🐶 If Your Pet Goes Missing

**Don't wait, and don't assume they'll find their way home.** In our experience, that rarely happens.

✔️ Go look for them immediately. Walk your neighborhood, drive nearby streets, and listen for barking or meowing. Call their name often.

✔️ Post on **local Lost & Found pet pages** for Wichita Falls (or your community). People who find pets are much more likely to check these pages than your personal page or general community groups.

✔️ Make sure your pet's **microchip information is up to date** with the microchip company.

✔️ Check our **Lost & Found** page frequently. New animals arrive throughout the day.

# # # 🐕 If You Find Someone's Pet

You can help reunite a family.

✔️ If it's safe to do so, walk or drive around the neighborhood and ask nearby residents if they recognize the pet. Many pets don't travel far from home.

✔️ Be cautious when approaching unfamiliar animals. Even friendly pets may be frightened and scared.

✔️ Take a **clear photo** and post it on local Lost & Found pet pages. A good picture is essential, especially when many pets are missing at the same time.

✔️ Have the pet scanned for a microchip. Most veterinary clinics, many pet stores, and Animal Services can scan for a chip **free of charge**.

The sooner you start looking—or help someone else by reporting a found pet—the better the chances of a happy reunion. Let's work together to get every pet back where they belong this holiday weekend. ❤️🐾

🎆 **Fireworks may be fun for us, but they can be terrifying for our pets.** 🎆

As we prepare to celebrate the 250th birthday of America this Fourth of July, please remember to make a plan to keep your pets safe.

Many pets become frightened by fireworks, thunder, and other loud noises. In fact, the week of the Fourth of July is one of the busiest times of the year for lost pets.

Here are a few things you can do to help:

🐾 Talk to your veterinarian about anxiety medications if your pet struggles with loud noises.

🐾 Create a safe, quiet space inside your home where your pet can relax.

🐾 Turn on fans, televisions, or other background noise to help mask the sounds of fireworks.

🐾 Provide enrichment such as stuffed KONGs, lick mats, puzzle toys, or treats to help keep them occupied.

🐾 Leave pets at home. We strongly encourage you not to bring them to fireworks displays or have them outside when fireworks are being set off. While some pets may not be bothered, most are.

Remember, these same tips can help during storms with thunder and lightning as well.

Most importantly, make sure your pets are wearing identification and that their microchip information is up to date.

☀️🐾 **Keep Your Pets Cool During This Heat Wave!** 🐾☀️

Wichita Falls Animal Services has already responded to cases of pets suffering from overheating since this heat wave began. As temperatures continue to rise, please take extra precautions to keep your pets safe.

Many people don't realize that **dogs and cats cool themselves primarily through panting—not sweating like humans do.** When temperatures and humidity levels are high, pets have to work even harder to regulate their body temperature. In humid conditions, they may pant twice as hard, and eventually their bodies can no longer keep up, causing them to overheat and potentially suffer heatstroke.

✅ Keep pets indoors during the hottest part of the day
✅ Provide plenty of fresh, cool water at all times
✅ Make sure outdoor pets have access to adequate shade
✅ Limit exercise and outdoor activity during extreme heat
✅ Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle

⚠️ **Signs of overheating include:**
• Excessive panting
• Heavy drooling
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting
• Difficulty breathing
• Collapse

If your pet shows signs of overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and **seek veterinary care as soon as possible.**

Heatstroke can happen quickly and can become life-threatening. A few simple precautions can save your pet's life.
