⚠️ 𝗡𝗢𝗥’𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗘𝗧 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗧𝗬 — 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 & 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗘! 🐾🌧️

With a nor’easter headed our way this weekend, now is the time to make sure you AND your pups are prepared! Strong winds, heavy rain, downed trees/limbs and potential power outages can all create additional risks for our dogs.

🐾 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 — even in a fenced-in yard.

🐾 Use a 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗛 for potty breaks. High winds, unfamiliar noises and flying debris can frighten even dogs who normally stay close.

🐾 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗖𝗞 𝗚𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗦 & 𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗦 before AND after the storm. Fallen trees and branches can damage fencing and create escape routes.

🐾 Keep collars and 𝗜𝗗 𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗦 𝗢𝗡 and make sure microchip information is up to date.

🐾 Bring in or secure loose outdoor items and avoid walking beneath large trees or near power lines during high winds.

🐾 Keep dogs away from downed wires, storm debris, standing water and flooded areas.

🐾 Have food, medications, water, flashlights and your dog’s other essentials ready in case of a power outage.

🧠 𝗨𝗣 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗘𝗡𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗛𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘!

Bad weather doesn’t have to mean a bored dog! This is the PERFECT weekend to break out the enrichment activities and give your pup some much-needed mental stimulation indoors.

Think frozen Kongs, Woof toys/Pupsicles, frozen LickiMats, puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, treat searches, training games and other food-based enrichment.

Mental enrichment can be incredibly valuable on days when normal walks, outdoor play and adventures have to be limited. Even a few short enrichment sessions throughout the day can give your dog an appropriate outlet to sniff, lick, chew, problem-solve and use their brain.

𝗣𝗥𝗢 𝗧𝗜𝗣: Prep and freeze a few enrichment toys BEFORE the storm arrives so they’re ready to grab throughout the weekend! ❄️

And once the storm passes, 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗬𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗢𝗨𝗧. Look for damaged fencing, fallen branches, sharp debris and anything that may have blown into the yard.

A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping our pups safe, comfortable and fulfilled. 🤍

🐶 𝗠𝗬 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗖𝗞𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧: Before you trust someone with your dog, 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 ⬇️

If you’re a dog owner, chances are there will come a time when you need someone else to care for your dog.

Maybe you work long days. Maybe your dog needs more exercise. Maybe you’re struggling with leash walking, reactivity, or behavior. Or maybe you simply need someone dependable who can step in when you can’t be there.

But here’s the thing…

𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀.

There’s a big difference between someone who can walk a dog and a professional who understands canine behavior, body language, safety, enrichment, and how to respond when something doesn’t go according to plan.

So before choosing a dog walker, pet care provider, or trainer, 𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗖𝗞𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧. 📌

Here’s what I would look for:

✅ 𝗔 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.
Are they properly insured and operating professionally, or is this simply something they do on the side?

✅ 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗶𝗱 & 𝗖𝗣𝗥 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲.
If your dog were injured, choking, overheating, or experiencing an emergency, would they know what to do?

✅ 𝗔 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲.
Can they recognize stress, fear, overstimulation, discomfort, and the subtle signals dogs give before a situation escalates?

✅ 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀.
Ask exactly how your dog will be handled and what methods or equipment may be used — especially when your dog is struggling.

✅ 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 “𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆” 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀.
How would they handle leash reactivity, fear, overstimulation, pulling, unexpected dogs approaching, or another challenging situation?

✅ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱.
Your dog’s age, breed, personality, health, behavior, energy level, and comfort all matter. Their care should reflect that.

✅ 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘀.
What happens if your dog slips equipment, becomes sick, encounters a loose dog, gets injured, or there’s an emergency in your home?

✅ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
Are they actively furthering their education? What certifications, credentials, or specialized training do they hold — and how do they stay current on canine care, behavior, and industry best practices?

And finally…

Do you feel confident handing this person your leash, your house key, and ultimately the responsibility for a member of your family?

𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲.
