Golden Retrievers are basically what happens when you take a sunshine filled therapist, a professional food critic, and the clingiest best friend you’ve ever had! and combine them into one fluffy dog with absolutely no sense of personal space.
They LOOK like they could guard your house, big, golden, majestic, like something out of a movie. But let’s be honest, if someone broke in with a friendly voice and a tennis ball, your golden isn’t protecting anything. They’re bringing them their favourite toy like, “finally, someone who understands me.”
And the eating? It’s not hunger, it’s a full-time personality trait.
Golden Retrievers don’t just love food, they believe food is a shared experience. Your snack is their snack. Your dinner is their emotional journey. You could feed them a full meal and they’ll still follow you into the kitchen like, “just checking in, for quality control.”
Then there’s the staring, but softer. Not intense like a lab, more like emotional manipulation. The gentle eyes. The head tilt. The slow tail wag. You’re not being pressured, you’re being guilted into sharing.
As puppies? Absolute chaos in a teddy bear disguise. You don’t hear them destroying things, it’s just quiet, suspiciously quiet and that’s when you realise something important has been lovingly redecorated.
And personal space? Doesn’t exist. A full-grown golden will see you sitting comfortably and think, “this would be better if I was directly on top of you.” And somehow, you let them.
But through all the fur, the constant need to be near you, the emotional dependence, they love you in the softest, happiest, most all-in way possible.
And honestly? That’s exactly why we’re completely obsessed with them 🤍
