Until then, catch ya at the north side of town!

Moving fence around on grassy pasture is a task...moving fence around through the thicket of the forest is…well…the worst!

Navigating trees, getting caught up on roots and branches, and of course eaten by mosiqutios - it is a puzzle to say the least!

The sheepies are currently very happy under a new shaded tree canopy, munching on a mix of native and invasive vegetation. A bit of pine, a lot of autumn olive, an array of ground cover…and their favorite, sasafras!

We are slowly transforming our very overgrown woody areas into silvopasture. While the transformation is slow, we can see the future of our work taking shape. For now, the sheepies are enjoying their roles of clearing brush with dreams of thick luscious pasture eventually growing beneath it🌾

Spring harvests are slim, but incredibly beautiful!
More and more is maturing each week, and with summer weather headed our way, we are emptying the greenhouse and filling the field as quick as these 2 little hands and a baby (along with the occasional set of helping hands) will allow.

The start of market season is often where Mother Nature challenges us most - filling our days with many tasks while keeping the market table less than full. A reminder to ease into the seasons shift.

Abundant harvests are near and we can’t wait to share them 💛

It’s been a busy week of potting up, harvesting, and sending wishes that the our latest plantings flourish!
It’s been a bit slow growing out here with a mix of soggy soil, chilly nights, and a baby balancing act. - however the temps are warming up, the field is dry, and we are feeling well balanced these days!

Out first planting is not quite ready for the market table, but we are ready to be back!

We will be at Montague Market tomorrow from 9-1 with lots of certified naturally grown seedlings for your garden, tasty green garlic, herbs perfect for a weekend mocktail/cocktail, fiber kits, a handful of flowers and greens, eggs, as well as some other farm treasures!
Stop by and say hi!

We will NOT be at Muskegon farmers market tomorrow, but look forward to starting there soon!

The farm has taught me how to mother and my baby has taught me how to slow down and love the farm🌱

I have often referred to the farm as my child over the years. Similar to a child, it has taken just about every ounce of my mental, physical, emotional, and financial capacity to raise, and through all of that I have been able to watch it grow and thrive, and I truly couldn’t be more proud.

Over the last year I wondered and worried how I could spread my capacity to be the resource I need to be to both the farm and my baby - 3 months in and it has pieced together in perfect harmony. A true symbiotic relationship.
The farm has truly taught me how to mother - The days of farming are long, laborious, and so full of love - all coming together to create its own form of beautiful chaos- similar to that of raising a human.

It has taught me that the effort I put in is the energy I get back

It has taught me that absolutely nothing goes as planned, but it all works out in the end

It has taught me that patience is important and not to sweat the small stuff

It has taught me that time does not slow down, nor pause, and how to embrace the seasons of life in the moment

Most importantly, as I look beyond my own farm and out to other farm and gardening friends, it has taught me that we as growers all tend to our gardens differently - spending different amounts of time, using different techniques and tools, sharing different thoughts and opinions - yet each garden still grows in its own unique way

The farm has taught me a million things that I can compare to mothering, and for that I am grateful.

As I raise my baby alongside the beautiful chaos of the farm, my baby too has taught me how to slow down and love the farm. While I have always found joy in my work, I have had to slow down in new and necessary ways this season - lots of pause and lots of admiration for all that this farm has become. I’m grateful for the slow down, which has brought new inspiration, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to raise my baby in the midst of this little dream.

Happy Mothers Day to all those who are growing, tending to, and nurturing throughout the seasons of life🌱

Mid May brings a balancing act of warm sunny days and chilly cold nights. With that brings an extra work load of covering, uncovering, and hand watering.
Every evening we give our seedling trays a lil nightcap of water, tuck them in tight with frost cloth, pop on the heater, and wish them well.
Every morning we greet them by uncovering them, watering them in well in preparation for the sunshine to come over the trees, and wish them a good day of growing.
It is a daily ritual this time of year, and takes about an hour from each end of the day.
As the season picks up we always look forward to wrapping up the frost cloth and putting this ritual to rest.
In the meantime wea are enjoying the last of the slow moments of spring before all of these seedlings head out to the field 🌱

If you’re on the hunt for some beautiful certified naturally grown, chemical free, and grown with love seedlings, we always grow a handful to share! Find us NEXT weekend at market to stock up on seedlings for your own garden!

Annnnnnd we’re off to the gas station again!

While we are a human scale farm with no gas powered machinery in the field, we do currently run our greenhouse heat and well pump off of a generator (the journey to connecting to the grid has been a marathon, not a sprint)

These nighttime lows pared with daytime sunshine have us running the generator what seems like continuously, and in turn has us running to the gas pump to keep it going.

While we typically take the stance of “it is what it is” when it comes to gas prices, the *few extra dollars* at each fill up is really adding up.

We’re hopeful for warmer nights..and to maybe join the power grid soon - in the meantime this is all part of how good food grows here!
