How does some of my pups have tan markings and be purebred? Well, the chocolate and tan phenotype requires an exact and rare combination of three distinct genetic loci.
• B Locus (Brown): The dog must be homozygous recessive (bb) to express a chocolate coat instead of black,
• K Locus (Dominant Black): The dog must be homozygous recessive (k"k") Normal solid-colored Labs carry the dominant K B gene, which masks other patterns.
• A Locus (Agouti): The dog must carry two copies of the tan point gene (a'a') When the kk" genotype unblocks the Agouti locus, the tan points finally show through the brown coat.

I've had lots of questions about the markings on some of my pups. Chocolate and tan Labrador Retrievers are purebred, "mismarked" Labradors featuring a rich brown base coat with tan markings on the eyebrows, muzzle, chest, and lower legs. Just like the black and tan variant, they resemble a hound or a Rottweiler color pattern but maintain the physical build and temperament of a standard Lab.
