🐑Lambing & Kidding Season Update🐐
Busy week for our team! Dr. Scampton (left), Megan, CVT (middle), and Dr. Wolpert (right) recently performed a successful c-section on this ewe after she wasn’t progressing in labor. Thanks to her owner acting quickly and bringing her in, both mom and babies are doing great!

Situations like this are a great reminder that when it comes to labor, timing matters! Being prepared and having the ability to haul your animal into our clinic for further care can make all the difference. C-sections in veterinary medicine are never a solo effort. They’re fast-paced, high-stakes situations where every second counts - and every team member plays a vital role in the outcome. From performing the surgery, monitoring anesthesia, stimulating babies, drying them off, tying their cords and making sure they receive colostrum.

💡Do you know when to call for help when your goat/ewe is in labor and not progressing?

🥶 Freezing Temps Are Here — Let’s Keep Our Animals Safe! 🐑🐐🐄

A few cold weather reminders:

• 💧 Fresh water matters — check often for frozen troughs, water heaters can be considered to prevent frozen water
• 🌬️ Block the wind — provide a thick layer of clean, dry straw for bedding and draft-free shelter
• 🧊 Watch for ice — slippery footing can cause injuries
• 🐐Keep a close eye on young, thin and older animals. When in doubt, check their temperature! 🌡️

Please contact our office if you have any questions! Stay warm out there ❄️ 🐐 🐄

🌟Let’s talk about a HOT topic recently- Urinary Calculi! 🌟

⁉️What are they?
- Small stones form in the bladder and can become lodged in the urethra or urethral process in mostly male goats/sheep preventing normal urination.

🐐Who is at risk?
- Most commonly in male (intact and castrated) goats/sheep - some are more genetically predisposed

👀Watch for:
- Increased vocalization, tail twitching, urine dribbling, straining to urinate, abdominal distention, blood in urine, can present as being constipated

⚠️Prevention:
- Do not offer any grain/corn or alfalfa to male goats/sheep
- Allow grazing, free choice access to grass hay, and offer warm water during the colder months
- Offer a plain, white salt block to encourage drinking
- Limit access to mineral blocks and loose minerals without consulting with your veterinarian

🚨Seek veterinary care immediately! This is considered a true emergency!🚨
Please call our office with any questions or concerns!

❄️Cold weather is here!❄️

As temperatures drop, our animals depend on us more than ever! Here are a few quick tips to keep your animals healthy and comfortable this winter:

🐄 Shelter: Provide a dry, draft-free place to get out of the wind. Even simple windbreaks can make a big difference.

🐷 Bedding: Add extra straw or bedding to help them stay warm and conserve energy.

🐐 Water: Check water sources AT LEAST twice a day - frozen buckets can lead to dehydration fast. Consider using heated waterers too!

🐑 Feed: Provide an unlimited access to good quality grass hay or supplement with feed to help maintain body heat and condition. **Feeding grain/corn to male goats and sheep is NOT recommended**

🌡️Temperature: When in doubt, check their temperature! Please call our office if you are unsure of what a normal temperature range is for your animals.
