🐾🍼 Puppies & Kittens: More Than Just Vaccines 💛

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is exciting, but did you know their first year is one of the most important stages of their life?

During that first year, we're not just giving vaccines. We're also helping monitor:

🐾 Growth and development
🦟 Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention
🪱 Intestinal parasites and deworming
⚖️ Nutrition and healthy weight gain
🦷 Teething and dental development
🎓 Socialization and behavior

This is also the perfect time to start getting your pet comfortable with:
✂️ Nail trims
🪥 Tooth brushing
🧼 Grooming
🤲 Gentle handling

The earlier they learn these things are normal, the easier vet visits and grooming appointments can be later in life!

💛 The first year goes by fast, but building good habits now helps create healthier, happier adult pets for years to come.

🦟🐶 "My dog missed one month of heartworm prevention. Is that a big deal?" 💊

Maybe. And that's what makes heartworm disease so tricky.

Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and can live in your pet's heart and lungs for years. The scary part? Most dogs show no signs at all in the early stages.

Heartworm prevention works by killing immature larvae before they can grow into adult worms. When doses are missed, gaps in protection can occur.

⚠️ Missing one dose doesn't automatically mean your dog has heartworms.

⚠️ But repeatedly missing doses or stopping prevention for a season increases the risk significantly.

If your pet has missed prevention, don't panic-but don't ignore it either.

🦟 Mosquitoes don't check calendars, seasons, or whether your dog is "mostly inside" before they bite.

📞 Give us a call. We can help determine if your pet needs to restart prevention or if testing is recommended.

The best heartworm prevention is the one that's given consistently every month. 💛🐾

🔥🐾 Fire Pits & Paw Burns: A Summer Reminder 🐾🔥

Summer nights around the fire pit are fun… until a curious pet gets a little too close 😅

Many pets-especially puppies and younger dogs-don’t understand that fire pits, hot coals, metal rings, and even cooled-looking ashes can still cause serious burns.

🚩 Signs of paw pad burns may include:
• Limping
• Excessive licking of the feet
• Red or darkened paw pads
• Blisters
• Reluctance to walk
• Crying or sensitivity when paws are touched

⚠️ And it’s not just paws. Curious pets can also burn noses, whiskers, or mouths trying to investigate grills, fire pits, or roasting sticks.

💡 Fire pit safety tips:
✔ Keep pets supervised around fires
✔ Use barriers or maintain distance from hot surfaces
✔ Watch for dropped skewers, hot grease, or food scraps
✔ Remember ashes and metal can stay HOT long after the fire looks out
✔ Provide pets with a cool resting area away from the heat

Some pets are drawn to warmth… others are drawn to chaos 😭🐾

Either way, a little extra caution can help keep summer nights safe for everyone 💛

👂🐾 Ear Infections: More Than Just Itchy Ears 🐾👂

Summer means more swimming, moisture, humidity, and unfortunately… more ear infections 😅💛

A lot of people expect ear infections to just look like scratching, but pets can show signs in MANY different ways.

🚩 Signs of an ear infection may include:
• Head shaking
• Scratching at ears
• Red or inflamed ears
• Odor from the ears
• Dark debris/discharge
• Pain when ears are touched
• Tilting the head
• Sensitivity or irritability

Some pets don’t even scratch much at all—they may simply seem uncomfortable or “not themselves.”

💧 During swim season, moisture trapped in the ears can create the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast to grow, especially in floppy-eared dogs or pets prone to allergies.

💡 Things that may help reduce risk:
✔ Dry ears well after swimming or baths
✔ Stay on top of allergies if your pet has them
✔ Routine ear cleaning if recommended by your veterinarian
✔ Don’t use Q-tips deep in the ear canal

⚠️ Ear infections are more than just annoying—they can become painful quickly and may worsen if left untreated. Chronic infections can even lead to deeper ear issues over time.

If your pet is shaking their head, scratching excessively, or their ears suddenly smell funky… it may be time for an exam 💛🐾

🩺🐾 Cooperative Care & Consent Training: Helping Pets Feel Safer During Care 🐾🩺

Did you know many zoos train their large animals to voluntarily participate in medical care? 👀

Elephants can present their ears for blood draws.
Big cats can offer paws for exams.
Even rhinos and giraffes can learn to calmly cooperate with veterinary procedures through trust, repetition, and positive reinforcement 💛

And the same concept can help our dogs and cats at home too 🐶🐱

The goal of cooperative care is not to “never make pets do anything.” Sometimes restraint, medications, or safety tools are still necessary. The goal is to help pets feel LESS fearful and stressed during everyday handling and veterinary care over time.

🐾 Cooperative care can help with:
✔ Nail trims
✔ Ear cleanings
✔ Brushing
✔ Teeth brushing
✔ Medications
✔ Carrier training
✔ Vet visits
✔ Paw handling

💡 Small positive experiences at home can make a HUGE difference.

Try things like:
🐶 Touching paws briefly → treat
🐱 Looking in ears → reward
🐾 Gently lifting lips to look at teeth → praise
🦴 Letting pets sniff nail clippers without using them
🧺 Leaving carriers out year-round with cozy blankets and treats inside
🪥 Introducing toothbrushes slowly with rewards
🎾 Practicing short, calm handling sessions during cuddle/play time
🥜 Using lick mats, frozen treats, or peanut butter during handling exercises

The goal is to create positive associations BEFORE pets are stressed or overwhelmed.

💛 Many pets are not being “dramatic” during vet visits or nail trims—they may simply never have learned that handling can feel safe. Tiny positive moments repeated over time can build a lot of confidence and trust. 🐾

🐾🦺 Let’s Talk About Muzzles 🦺🐾

Muzzles often get looked at as something “bad” or scary-but in reality, when used correctly, they are simply safety tools 💛

And they’re not just for biting.

Sometimes muzzles are used to help keep pets from hurting themselves too. Pets with pica or scavenging habits may try to eat dangerous things on walks like rocks, mulch, trash, sticks, or other foreign objects that could cause choking or life-threatening obstructions. In those situations, a basket muzzle can actually help keep the pet safer.

Muzzles may also be used during:
✔️ Veterinary visits
✔️ Grooming appointments
✔️ Training sessions
✔️ Emergency situations
✔️ Injuries or painful conditions

Even the sweetest pet may bite when they’re scared or painful-not because they’re “aggressive,” but because they’re frightened.

💡 A GOOD muzzle should allow a dog to:
✔️ Pant
✔️ Drink water
✔️ Take treats

Basket muzzles (plastic, leather, or metal styles) are usually the safest option for longer wear because they allow proper airflow and cooling.

⚠️ Fabric/sleeve muzzles that hold the mouth tightly closed should only be used briefly and carefully, especially during warm weather, because dogs NEED to pant to cool themselves. (you will see these mostly used in the vets office like ours, because they are only on for a very short period of time)

❌ Muzzles should never be used as punishment.
❌ They should not be left on unsupervised for long periods.
❌ Incorrect sizing can cause rubbing, discomfort, overheating, or make them ineffective.

🐶🐱 There are different muzzle styles for different pets and situations, including basket muzzles, fabric muzzles, cone-shaped cat muzzles, and temporary emergency gauze muzzles.

The goal o muzzle training is comfort and safety-not fear. With treats, patience, and positive introductions, many pets learn to wear them comfortably and calmly 💛🐾

Bel Air, MD – June 4, 2026- Given the dry conditions, the Harford County Health Department would like to remind residents of Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR 26.11.07.03C1), which prohibits open fires in Harford County from June 1 - August 31 each year. ☀️🐾 Hot Weather Walking Reminder 🐾☀️

With the temperatures we've been seeing lately, try to avoid walks during the hottest part of the day—typically between 10 AM and 2 PM. 🌡️

🐶 Instead, opt for:
🌅 Early morning walks
🌙 Evening strolls

🔥 Don't forget about those paws! Pavement can become much hotter than the air temperature and may cause painful burns.

💡 Try the 7-Second Test:
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds.

If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

✔ Bring water
✔ Stick to grass when possible
✔ Watch for excessive panting or slowing down

A cooler walk is a safer walk. 💛🐾
