This is absolutely heartbreaking šŸ’”

Rescuing is definitely not for everyone and unfortunately dogs and puppies coming from these large ā€œcommercial breedersā€ , (aka - Greeders, aka Puppy Mills) notoriously from Ohio and Amish, have been so severely mistreated in so many ways they may require a lot more care, not just medically, and they can require very specific environments that they will feel safe in. If you are considering a Berner and feel like you may be a good fit for a rescue, please do reach out to the shelter! ā¤ļø

🐾 As for our upcoming litters, I know I have some messages to get to as I took a break from online after this last litter went home to focus on the training of our pup, the health of our two girls , and juggling all the ups and downs of family life šŸ™‚ I can update everyone here that we did complete Bailee’s OFA scans & testing ( all came back perfect!ļæ¼) at this point we are weighing the timing of her heat / potential litter and when will be the best time for her and the other girls in our home to proceed with welcoming a litter. There is so much that goes into having a large litter and the health and happiness of our girls ALWAYS comes first. If any family that has inquired or is waiting on a litter and finds they do not wish to wait for potentially one more heat cycle I would be more than happy to help find a reputable breeder that can help them welcome a pup sooner or share some links for potential rescues such as this one ā¤ļøšŸ¾

Puppy PSA- little stinker snuck past the open gate right to the couch but gets stuck bc she can’t jump down ( as she shouldn’t ) I know it’s tough bc we want them with us and snuggling on sofas and bed but just be careful to help them down gently as they are puppies and growing and they should be avoiding stairs and jumping up and down on furniture as much as possible šŸ„°ā¤ļø

Bailee is turning 3 this summer and after Lola letting her be around and play with this litter she has gone full speed into wanting to be a mom! Up until now she still seemed very puppy like so we didn’t plan to breed her anytime soon (if at all if she didn’t show signs of being ready ) this litter of Lola’s , everything changed ! Lola let be around this litter a lot and something just clicked and she is now obsessed with babies! We are going to get some weight on her, get her scans , and let her be a mama like she is soo eager to be !! She’s going to be such an amazing mama too !!

A couple weeks ago we started the first step, open door crate ! Hope is they associate the crate with the comfort they felt snuggled up with their litter mates in it. (They will go home with a blanket that has their litter mate scents on it to help them feel that comfort ) .

Our girls ended up loving the crate and we called it ā€œtheir roomā€ they would go take their toys in there and lay down when they wanted and we eventually only needed to close it when leaving the house or at night. By the first year or so , they were safe to be left open all the time and only there for if they wanted it . As they slowly stopped going in, we removed . Not all dogs will love it, but many will seek it out if introduced properly bc they will find comfort in it . In the puppy phase there are soo many destructive things they can get into so it’s for their safety ( and your home ) to be sure they are safely secured when you aren’t able to give them your undivided attention in the early stages . If they aren’t loving an enclosed crate or you don’t have the space for a large one consider a portable fencing pen that you can keep them in ( with water and grass pad to potty on in the beginning . Be sure the pen is blocking any walls or trim bc as a puppy they will chew anything and everything without your consistent redirection ) . If you choose to crate or not is 100% a personal preference, just as long as you have a plan to keep them safe when your eyes aren’t on them. There are lots of great articles online to show how to properly begin crate training, their first intro is reallly important ! If they feel forced in too quickly or for too long it will cause stress and anxiety rather than comfort. We have started the first step and they all go in and out of the crate stress free. šŸ¾ā¤ļø

Crate training doesn't have to be stressful. Follow this step-by-step guide to teach your dog or puppy to love their crate at their own pace.

Love this intro to BMDšŸ¾ā¤ļø We have had At LEAST 5 become Certified Therapy / Service dogs ! They are amazing therapy dogs and family dogs .
*Note the AKC size standard on the back wall from AKC—- females 70-95lbs and males UP To 115lbs!! This is soo important and a huge factor in how we are working to preserve and better the breed. I know the big bears that are 130+ lbs are absolutely gorgeous However… they are NOT meant to be that big and that contributes to the shorter life expectancy and quality of life . They are not meant to be as large as a St Bernard. We have purposely chosen to breed with a male that is 115 or less to contribute to the process of making the breed healthy and back to their intended sizing. Sooo many people will see a BMD that is absolutely perfect sizing and they will comment they are small . šŸ™ˆ the problem is all the promotion of the oversized bears and subsequent breeders that are PURPOSELY advertising that dad is 130lbs+ like it’s a good thing ! It’s a sales tactic bc they know people love the big bears. It’s heartbreaking bc they don’t care about the breed and are taking advantage , completely ignoring the actual increased health risks they are contributing to.

Bigger isn’t better . Bred to be Healthy, is.
